Oh, practice is so important. This BOM is the first and only time I have ever done this technique. I really need practice. I call this English paper torture.

Carol - for your first try you really did a great job. The colors are wonderful together too.

Jennily............I just love your finished August block for the 2012 BOM Calendar project. I just read you new instruction's for the glue method & it sounds really good. You are presenting such a wonderful lesson in QAYG quilting & I know that we all enjoy it so much. I haven't started mine yet, but I am getting anxious to do so. Thank you for all of your terrific lesson's & thank you for sharing your beautiful August block.

Tweety2911 08-09-2012 12:25 PM

Rural101 your block came out beautiful! I found that I learned lessons on each PP project :)
Thomp106 nice choice of fabrics, also beautiful block!
Jenniky, love your QAYG block! Beautiful!!

Jenniky 08-09-2012 03:39 PM

Thanks Tweety, Its not spectacular, Really need Batiks to make this pattern shout, Im here. I did the blue background to designate sky. And then the flare of white, yellow and red. The fabrics look great with all the other blocks in the BOM quilt so far, but definitely does not have the pizzazz the Batiks bring to the square. :)

Here's my block, just finished today. And, like Rural, this was my first attempt at paper piecing. Hopefully if I do another one, the seams will line up!

Vagavondindigo: What a creative use of special stitches. Gives me inspiration to try someday.

Jeanine 08-13-2012 12:48 PM

stichinluvr: Party! My first thought upon seeing your block. Summer parties were always the most fun.

Jeanine 08-13-2012 12:49 PM

Missgigglewings: love the fussy cutting you did on that batik; gives movement to the sun's rays.

Jeanine 08-13-2012 12:50 PM

Pat...........your block is absolutely wonderful!! :D You are another one of our beginner paper piecer's & you did a great job. I love your fabric's & color's. They are so warm & inviting looking. I know you will find each time you try to PP that it will get faster & faster & you are going to LOVE it a lot. Thank you so much for sharing your lovely block with all of us today!!
:D :D :D :D

labeelady 08-13-2012 07:14 PM

Thanks, Sulabug and Jeanine for your nice comments!

Thanks also go to that nice tutorial I found on youtube. The pumpkin fabric I used in the block came from Vogue Fabrics in Evanston IL. I had a chance to go there last week during a layover between trains. I could have spent all day going through their remnant bin!

Anael 08-14-2012 12:32 AM

WOW you all made such gorgeous blocks! I had a great time looking :D
I should start on my block too but I have to finish a quilt first. So I guess it will be the end of this week or next week but I will finish before the end of this month :D

mimiknoxtaylor 08-14-2012 01:24 AM

great blocks! And you ladies that did this as your first attempt at PP- I'm very impressed! Its not any easy one for a 1st.
I just started last night. Have been away from home with grands for 2 weeks!

thomp116 08-14-2012 04:11 AM

Thanks for all the comments on my block! Looks like everyone had a good time capturing the feel of August!

Thanks SulaBug...I think, now that some time has passed, I would like to try this technique again. I can see where this is really good for matching seams. Another thing I noticed--I hate triangles. I have a mental block about them. If I cut my scraps into squares or rectangles, PP'ing would work much better for me.

rural01 08-14-2012 10:03 AM

Helen T. thanks for your kind words. You are right--there is no better way to learn than simply by doing. PP is interesting. I don't think I'd like to do a whole quilt with this block, but I look forward to my next PP project.

Sorry, but I just don't enjoy paper piecing that much, so I just did a sunny block. All the nice posted blocks are beautiful though. I have alot going on right now, so needed a simple block.

Jeanine 08-14-2012 07:26 PM

VickiM: I love your block! It is sunny and in the spirit of summer. Very creative.

Since I got to make my August block early, I had the urge to start putting my blocks together. Since I decided I wanted a square quilt, I am adding a center block which have wreaths for each season.

VickiM...........You did a fantastic job making your bright, sunny & warm quilt block for the month of August 2012. It is perfectly okay that you are not comfortable with PP'ing & chose your own pattern. We just want eveyone to feel good about their blocks & have a quilt they will be proud of at the end of the year. GOOD JOB!! :D Thank you for sharing with all of us here on the quilting board.

Jeanine.............What a great idea adding the extra blocks to make your quilt square, by the end of the year. Your Seasonal Wreath blocks are going to add so much to your quilt. All of your blocks have turned out awesome. We appreciate you sharing a group photo of all of them together. Such inspiration!! :D Thank you so much for sharing with all of us.

Vicki, Love your block. After doing 1 block (and I love PP), and only half finishing another (I'm doing 3 of these for grands) I wish I'd changed course just for the time factor.

Jeanine, All your blocks are pretty. I haven't thought that far ahead :D

Hi Mimi............I am just checking in with you today, to see how your three blocks for your grands are coming along for the month of August!! :D Before you know it, it will be time to post the September BOM for 2012. I know everyone is going to love the choice, as it is so pretty & much quicker to make than this one was. Keep on making your blocks & be sure to share pictures, as you get them done!! I just had to add a little teaser clue for everyone!! Hope everyone is having a Great Day.
