Hi there,
so, since Judy kindly confirmed that I would have enough of my medium fabric after all, I decided to go with my first choice.

Here's my clues 2 and 4 blocks completed.

Now to get my head round the clue 2 sizes. Please correct me if I'm wrong. The HSTs are to be 2" unfinished, sewn on to a 2" unfinished square, making a 2" x 3.5" unfinished rectangle, yes?

Hope so, cos that's what I've cut! At least I know I can get more of these 2 fabrics if necessary :D:o

Looks good Delphina.

lawsonmugs 02-01-2017 07:24 AM

I love the pretty blocks .

paintmejudy 02-01-2017 08:44 AM

Siodach yes, you have the size correct at 2 x 3-1/2. And love the way your block looks.

And now I'm all caught up ready for Saturday's clue .

Siodach love that layout -- makes a pretty block where you made flying geese facing the center.

OK -- I'm nosy. It looks like a Bernina. Am I correct? What brand/model did you buy?

blocks are done yeah

Belfrybat 02-03-2017 11:45 AM

I'm behind due to trying to finish a few other projects. I have the pieces cut for this last step and will make them this afternoon and tomorrow, so I'll be sort of caught up by tomorrow's clue.

On the upside, I've quilted 8 tops in the past 12 days on the Bailey. Once I got my muscle memory back for mid-arming, I wanted to get as many quilted as I could. Then my least favourite part -- the binding starts next week.

lawsonmugs 02-03-2017 04:51 PM

Oh wow I just realized tomorrow is Saturday. I still haven't done last weeks clue. I did go to St James Winery in Saint James ,Mo. last Saturday. I tried "Cherry Chocolate " wine and loved it. I'm not a sweet wine drinker but this is very good. I bought a bottle of it. So have a glass while we wait.

Everyone's blocks look great! It's always interesting to see how the different fabrics play together. So here's mine for this week. Really anxious to see the "great reveal."

I've had some St. James wine, but not that one. Like you, I don't usually choose sweet wines (other than Tawny Port). I'll have to try it.

Really looking forward to seeing the last clue. This mystery has taught me that when the fabric requirements say light, it means light, not a medium. My black and green is way too dark. I've been eagerly awaiting this last clue to see how I can save this quilt and use all these really ugly pieces of blocks I have made. I have not made last weeks clue hoping to get some insight into how to lighten up my blocks. I think I know what I am going to do, but it's dependent on the final outcome. There's a saying in the Deep South that applies to my first part of the blocks....butt ugly. "smile"

paintmejudy 02-04-2017 07:00 AM

today is the final clue!

And here we are, again, at the end of another mystery. Hope you like this pattern as much as I do.

First of all, from the medium, cut 24 pieces that measure 2” by 3.5”

From the light cut 24 pieces that measure 2” square. From the dark, cut 24 pieces that measure 2” square. You will again be making mirror image units. See the photo.

Snowball the light and the dark to the medium, watching the angle. Sew 2 units together, and press the seam OPEN. There will be 24 of each of the snowballed V- blocks that measure 3-1/2” square.

Take the 2” x 3-1/2” units previously made and sew to the V-block, making 24 units that measure 3-1/2” by 6-1/2” long. Watch the placement, sew as shown in photo.

Make six of the 6-1/2” blocks as shown on the right side of picture showing the C and D strip sets. . To do this, you will need 25” of the medium-dark-medium strip set labeled as C . And you will need 23” of the dark-medium-dark strip set labeled D. The extra inch allows you to square up your strip set before cutting and to square off the last segment. Sew and press in same manner as you did last week.

Cut twelve segments 2” x 6.5” of set C and six segments 3-1/2” x 6-1/2“of set D. Make 6 blocks
From the medium, cut 24 squares that measure 3-1/2” square. Sew 2 of these to each end of 12 of the flower piece made last week, leaving 12 pieces to be laid out as shown. Assemble the blocks. Press as indicated in the picture. When the rows are sewn together, press to the outside. This will allow today’s blocks to nestle with the blocks made last week. You will have six blocks measuring 12-1/2” square.
As shown in the picture lay out the 12 blocks in alternating rows then and sew together.

Add sashing, and a border the width of your choosing. I cut my sash at 1-1/2” wide and my borders are 2-1/2” wide. I would have liked to see them a bit wider, but made the quilt to the size constraints of the charity it was made for.

Sandwich and quilt; trim; bind. And all done.

See how pretty? I know some of you were unhappy making small pieces but hope you all survived. It wasn’t that bad, was it? I hope not. But I think that using smaller pieces in this medium-dark block gives more definition to the block.

Can’t wait to see the finished projects!

retiredteacher09 02-04-2017 07:16 AM

Very pretty. You have a great eye for color and design.

I may switch out my medium. I will figure that out later today. :)

Thanks again for a wonderful Mystery Train Ride.

Wow Judy! Thank you so much for another beautiful pattern!!!

Just Jan 02-04-2017 07:20 AM

JUDY that is gorgeous! I have been sick (still am) so have not finished last weeks clue, and don't know when I will get back to it, but hopefully I can at least make a table runner. Sooooo pretty! I am one of those you mentioned who hates making small pieces. Was thinking that the last block could be enlarged to make a 16" block for a beautiful pillow! Thanks for a fun ride. Jan

PS/ Forgot to ask... is there a name for this block? The outside part reminds me of Water Lilies.

paintmejudy 02-04-2017 07:45 AM

Jan - guess we can just call it Unknown Mysterious Block. I had seen the 3-1/2" flower part someplace, don't remember where.

Chasezzz 02-04-2017 07:56 AM

Judy...quick question before I start...In the beginning part of the instruction you say to cut 24 medium 2" x 3 1/2" pieces that then are made into 24 chevron shaped rectangles measuring 3 1/2" square with mirror image snowballed pieces sewn together. Doesn't that mean we need to cut 48 medium 2" x 3 1/2" pieces and diagonally cut the light and dark squares in half to create the 48 each triangles to snowball?

paintmejudy 02-04-2017 08:04 AM

Yup, Chasezzz, another typo. I guess everyone noticed it and figured out I had another boo boo. I think I need to quit doing these mysteries, can't seem to catch my typos.

Chasezzz 02-04-2017 08:09 AM

No, keep up the mysteries!! With all of us on the lookout, any typos will be caught!

Audrey 02-04-2017 08:18 AM

Love it. Always look forward to them. Thanks again for all your hard work.

paintmejudy 02-04-2017 09:02 AM

Thanks, Chasezzz

lawsonmugs 02-04-2017 09:03 AM

Judy this is a beauty. Thank You so much for the train ride. I messed up some of my light fabric so gonna have to start over. That won't be that big of a deal though. I'm making a table runner.( 3 blocks.)I'll be watching for the next train ride. (hopefully).Hugs Mary

Evie 02-04-2017 09:12 AM

Judy, thank you again for a beautiful project! I'm off to do my blocks -- and then to make more for a larger quilt. :)

LavenderBlue 02-04-2017 09:27 AM

Judy, thanks so much for the entire mystery.....beautiful!

AngeliaNR 02-04-2017 09:28 AM

Great mystery, Judy. I'm off to finish cutting and then draw lines (384 of them--Yikes!). :)

Siodach 02-04-2017 09:35 AM

What a lovely block! I think I can honestly say there's nothing I want to change lol, which if you've seen my previous history, is a big compliment to this pattern!!!!!!!!

Thank you Judy

Delphina 02-04-2017 09:55 AM

They are beautiful blocks. However I think the next ones are a tad to hard for me. I will figure out something to do with what I have. I have a ton of the little blocks of 4 left I made way to many. I am not good at following instructions. Unless they are for a first grader lOL

P-BurgKay 02-04-2017 10:21 AM

Thank you Judy, I have aboard and about have the first 6 blocks made. Looking forward to finishing. Some day I will figure it out how to post pictures, as of yet, I haven't figured it out. Kay

Tomara 02-04-2017 10:34 AM

Thank you Judy, I have enjoyed the ride and experience. I do need to know what you mean by snowballing? other than that I think I can do this block with my best friend seam ripper.

Redtop 02-04-2017 10:49 AM

I sat out this mystery thinking I have far too many projects going-some are just started, half way completed or in tops ready to be hand quilted.
Judy, this is beautiful and I have to make one!!! Yeah---I'm digging in my stash to see what I can come up with. Thanks for sharing your time and your talent.

mmac71 02-04-2017 10:55 AM

Tomara: I am new at this too...if you look back to pg. 46, Judy's first picture shows the 2" squares with a line drawn. You place this sq. on top of the rectangle and sew maybe one or two threads from the line so when pressed it works better than following exactly on the line, then repeat for the dark 2" sq. the same way at the other end of the rectangle. Then repeat going in the other direction for the other 24 pieces (mirror image). Hope it is clear looking at the pictures is how I muddle through.

Tomara 02-04-2017 10:59 AM

Thank you and yes that does help also i went and looked at her pictures to get the idea. Think I got it now . This has been fun learning for me

I have found trying different blocks helps in learning this new to me fun!

The V blocks aren't really hard, but if you find them intimidating just make them as 4 2 inch half square triangles that would make a 3.5 inch square, it would just add a seam.
