I said I would put up another tute - so here goes!! [pasting what I wrote yesterday and saved to Word...] I do love paper piecing because it gives you such great precision as a final result. However, having said that... I always evaluate a block I want to sew, whether it be a DJ or some other project, to see if it can be easily measured and cut to avoid having to take out that paper. I thank whoever it was gave us the idea of using the lighter weight child crayola paper, but I still prefer to skip the paper whenever possible. Many of my blocks that are totally PP on 'that quilt' I have adapted to a combo of PP and careful cutting and sewing... you MUST be accurate in those two steps! Accuracy means you have to know where to cut and where 'you' sew your 1/4" - not everyone sews the same. It doesn't matter that your seams are actually closer to 3/8" so long as you cut your pieces 3/8" beyond the sewing line :) I will post 2 example of what I mean: Block C-2 'streak of lightning' is actually this week's block ...well just got it finished last night! Instead of PP in the center, I cut strips 1 1/4" wide [you may want to cut them slightly wider and make your adjustments after the first seam.] cut two of the dark and one of the light each 4 1/2" long and stagger them. This will give you the top and bottom rows. Also cut 2 light pieces and one dark piece 2" x 1 1/4" for your middle row - stagger them 3/8." Make a 'template' of one row on tracing paper. When you have sewn the strips [or three pieces] together in the order in the photos, cut them according to the template, matching the tracing paper lines to the seam lines and adding 1/4" seam to each side. Your strips should be 1 1/4" tall. I sewed a ¼” seam on the larger side piece that will house the last diamonds to within ¼” of inside edge. Next I attached the finished edge to my center section. I cut the diamond out of my template and transferred the placement to my block for reverse sewing. I also hand sewed the remaining two corners. |

Here are my three blocks for this week!! I showed you C5 in a tute already. I also combined straight piecing with careful cutting and PP for C4 and C8. I only PP'd one section in each:[ATTACH=CONFIG]333363[/ATTACH]
For C4 – I measured the center sections. They finish 3/8 and ½” sections. I knew I needed several inches of yellow 7/8” wide and 1” wide. I started with a 1 x 6” section of yellow attached to a slightly narrower strip of white. Evened out the edge and then trimmed it down to what I needed so it could be pieced together without paper! All white background finishes ¼” So you need to cut a long strip ~ 16” total a minimum of ¾” wide [I prefer to simply cut wider and after the first seam is sewn, I press and make sure I have ½” of white left. I also “precut” three separate template sections for paper piecing to not waste fabric for C-4 above. I often use civil war charm squares and are limited to what I have.
[ATTACH=CONFIG]333385[/ATTACH] For C-8, Hani’s Crown again I only PP’d one portion. After the center 1 ¾” square, I cut two 1 ¾” squares of print diagonally. Next the PP sections and lastly, two 3 ¾” triangles cut diagonally. |

Gus, you truly are the most helpful thread leader. I've been MIA and poor Jane thinks I've forgotten her. I miss her and all y'all. ( ;) to my DJ-BFF) Those silly classes I'm taking .....well that's all I want to say about that. Jane I'll finish you I promise!

So, after mowing grass, trimming up 3 evergreens and hauling 4 loads of branches to a hole to be burned, I remembered that it is Sunday, and I should get some blocks posted. Life is really making me slow down on my DJ, but even if I post late, I will hang in there.

On Friday I promised to get back on the wagon; so I did. Since I have fallen behind, I figured it didn't matter what blocks I did as long as I did something! So I selected blocks that my fragile ego could manage: D13 - Field of Dreams M10 - Simple Simon - I think the name speaks for itself. These blocks have to be made too right?!? On the wagon, strapped in and making progress...no thanks to my "swap queen" DJ BFF who strong armed me into doing board swaps. ;) Great fun if you haven't tried them. Oops, don't let me distract any of you too. :) |
