Here are two more blocks.... [OMG!] H8 [for week beginning tomorrow] and H10 [from week of Dec 9 :rolleyes:]

A good thing.... I got home from my DGS's basketball game at 11:40 this morning [now 12:31] I hadn't started H10. I cut, sewed, pressed, and took pictures in about half hour! If you follow my directions you can too :) You can actually go to the instructions for it on thatquilt.com to start it out and see how to make halfsquare triangles which are used in both these blocks.

Difference - DONT cut 3" squares!! to make halfsquare triangles, take finished size = 1" for block H10 and add 1 1/4" - for H10 cut the squares 2 1/4" [3" is a big waste!] for H8 the measurement is 2" [the hourglass finishes 3/4"] .. these instructions are taking me longer than the sewing...

more cutting for H10 - to make halfsquare triangles, cut one each of print and background 2 1/8"; print squares are cut 1 3/4"
for outer border, you need 4 background sections 3 x 1 1/2"

I did absolutely no paper piecing for either of these ... simply careful cutting. I used reverse applique for inner part of H8. As you can see, I cut triangles and added those to the center background strips, cut 1" x 3" and [2] 1" x 1.5" ... I cut a 2" square in half diagonally ...NO NO dont do that because you will only have two threads to applique to. What you should cut is a circle a minimum of 3" in diameter [the finished circle is 2 1/1"] to have enough seam allowance. For the corners I cut 2 - 2" squares in half diagonally. For the strips on either side of the "hourglasses" I cut strips 1 1/4" x 2" and trimmed the whole thing after I put it together.

OK...have the book, the software and have signed up for BOM through Stitchin Heaven that starts in August. They also have a Blue DJ and a Red DJ. I should get all my UFOs done by then so I can concentrate on it.

OOOOps!!! just got home from a rugby game and my computer was still on and it looked like the post never went through. Thank God it did! What I did notice was that I referred to the hourglasses as "halfsquare triangles" ....ooops no they are quarter-square triangles. So sorry! H-10 has two actual halfsquare triangles in the center and 4 quarter-square triangles in the outer border; H-8 has four quarter-square triangles at the corners

A pretty easy week (not much applique!).

Adnil, I'm so glad you're starting your DJ -- you'll be hooked in no time! I've been really tempted to sign up for Stitchin Heaven's Blue DJ. Seems expensive, but I'd hate to add up what I've spent on DJ fabrics so far. And it might be worth the cost to pay someone else to pick out the fabric!

Gus -- thanks for the tutes. They may be for blocks we've already done, but I'm sure we can apply your technique to future blocks.

I am so glad I found this forum thread. I started my Dear Jane in 2003 and have been working on it here and there since. So much life as we know can happen. Sons got married, grandchildren being born.... But I have made up my mind to finish this quilt while I am still able, lol. So I am grateful for the encouragement I find here. I do have a question. I am ready to start joining some of my blocks. My blocks are finished at 5 inches. I need help with sashing. What is the best way to attach sashing and what size do I need? Any help is appreciated.

Hi, Pewa88 -- so glad you're joining us. We'd love to see pictures of the blocks you've done so far. Are your blocks 5" before joining them to the sashing or 5-1/2"? The original Dear Jane is 5" before adding the sashing (or 4 1/2" after the sashing is added). Since I'm lousy at math, I've stuck with the original DJ measurements so I didn't have to figure anything, especially when it came time to add the triangles. So the blocks are 5" unfinished and the sashing is cut 1" wide (or 1/2" when it's joined to the blocks). I cut the 1" strip into 5" pieces and joined the blocks to each other row by row, then I added a long 1" strip at the bottom of each row. Some people have put cornerstones on the long sashing between each block, which may end up being easier because you're only sewing together 5" plus 1" for the cornerstone at a time, but the long sashing worked fine for me.

I love everyones blocks. I am continuing to lurk here. I started my DJ and have 11 blocks finished. I really want to make one. I haven't touched it in months. Life keeps getting in the way. I also keep getting distracted by other projects. Some day I will finish it. I am so jealous of all the progress everyone is making. Keep up the good work. I continue watching this thread for all of the assembly tips.

Thanks for the reply Katybob. My blocks before sashing are 5 inches. I have attached two pictures of the blocks I have made so far. I am using scrapes from projects I have made, no particular choice of fabric except trying to use the same value found in the book photos.
