PokerDiva, I hadn't even thought about taking the paper off a whole quilt at once!:shock: Maybe at that point I'd just put it in the washing machine and hope for the best.

Oh my, that is a scary thought. LOL.

Well, I"ve spent the bettrer part of the last hour catching up on all the postings. I hadn't 'subscribed' to the thread and was far behind in reading and 'gawking' at all the fantastic stars. My Alaska is still on the machine. I'm half way finished and hope to have it done before tomorrow. DH and I are going on a bird watching trip to Hiwassee to look for the hooded crane that has made Tennessee it's part time home (they're usually found in Asia, not North America), so need to work hard today and finish. Keep up the the great work ladies - they're all fabulous.

whitepine.... You should not be impressed... I'm totally nuts... going to burn myself out doing this but I get board looking at one project. So I'm working on the 50 Stars, the BOM at Craftsy, a paper pieced Crazy Quilt of my parents clothes, completing a UFO that I tore apart (because my seams didn't match up), working on a Leader and Ender quilt of 1 1/2" squares, and collecting scraps of fabric from my paper pieced projects to do a confetti quilt. So actually, I'm working on 6 quilts. Oh dear, I am totally nuts.

You'd end up with a soggy mess with bits and pieces of paper stuck all over your quilt. Think: kleenex in a pocket going through the washer!

I have taken the paper off those section with lots of intersections. Now I'm going to remove the paper from around the outer edge of the sections before sewing together. Then I don't see why you couldn't remove the rest.

Alaska is finished. Used the same background as the first we did (Alabama), but I'm not so sure I like it with this star as much as the first. Oh, well, I'm using this background until it's all gone and then I'll find another large piece in my stash. Don't want to buy any fabrics in the making of this project - and I have enough in my stash to do it!! I don't know about the rest of you, but I've gone SABLE - Stash Accumulated Beyond Life's Expectancy. Here's the pic -

When I was taught to paper piece I was told to leave all of the paper on. When you are paper piecing you have a lot of bias edges and they could stretch on you and make a mess.
I would like to post my blocks on here but can't figure out how to do it. I went to the help page but it wasn't much help. I have 3 finished because I have a class next week that will put me behind and I plan on starting a Dear Jane quilt too. |
I rarely ever leave the papers on my paper piecing projects. If you work it right, you don't have to have a lot of bias and it's just cumbersome keeping papers on, but I do usually leave papers on while putting the block together, then remove them...maybe it's Ford/Chevy thing? :)

help posting your pics

I have 3 finished because I have a class next week that will put me behind and I plan on starting a Dear Jane quilt too. To post your pictures- after you have loaded them into a folder on your computer- come here- and down below---where it says 'post quick reply' go advanced cancel----click on 'go advanced' that will take you to a page with a reply box---scroll down- about 1/2 way down the page it says---"manage attachments"==click there--- then a Browse box will come up so you can find your picture- find the pic- click on it- then a new (box/page) will come up- there is an 'upload' button- lower right corner- click on that- then part way down you will see it saying---uploading picture please wait. when it is finished the picture file will show up in the attachment box- go ahead and close that box- and submit your reply- you do have to add each picture one at a time- but you can when one finishes uploading add another and then another-before submiting reply- i hope this helps |
i remove my papers when i finish the block- unless i need the outside (match points) to connect the blocks later- then i leave the outer papers-and remove the inner (i try to use muslin foundations alot- so i can just leave them in and not deal with paper removal) but with these stars they are on papers- so i'm removing as i go- so i don't have alot to deal with when i'm ready to construct the quilt :) kind of like trimming up the blocks as you go so you don't have alot of that to do when you are trying to construct....
|
i do 'square up' my block before i remove the paper- i turn the block paper side up when it's finished- line up a 1/4" mark on the ruler on the outer line around the block- and trim--so i have an accurate 1/4" seam allowance around each block- then i remove the papers- snap a picture- and hang the block on the design wall- :)

I just ordered this book will play catch up when I get it . How do I book mark this
|
newbee3 - to bookmark, click on thread tools at top of posting, then click on subscribe to this thread. On next screen, in the box labeled FOLDER - change subscription to bookmark, then click on add subscription. It is a little confusing the first time so be patient.
|
Go up to the top where it says thread tools. Click on subscription. Takes you to another screen. Click on subscription, then bookmark.

ME TOO!! I've been planning my DJ since September. Then I saw this and fell in love with it too. Then I talked my sister into doing "It Takes Two" AND Deb's "Churn Dash" swap. And now I'm starting to panic... Any advice? |
Concerning removing the paper, I don't think there will be any bias edges, since the corner blocks are all cut right angled with straight edges on the outside. I removed paper when all those center seams come together and then when the eight parts come together as a block, I remove all the paper. Hope there won't be trouble later, but I would rather deal with bias than removing all the paper at once.

It is gusting to 45 mph outside with snow. So I'm staying in my cozy home and looking out every now and then. We are not supposed to get any accumulation to speak of with this storm. The cold and wind are more than enough to suit me. |
I'm done with Arizona too, now to my other projects..... I love these stars. I'll wait until Sunday to post.
|
Everyone is so on the ball. I am done with mine too. Can't wait till Sunday to see all the new pretties.
|
Is anyone else having problems with reading messages? Even with a one line message, I have to scroll to read it and some I can't read at all. This just started today or yesterday.
|
No problems here whitepine..... You need to run a virus scan and/or the anti-spyware program...
Shutting the computer down (not just a re-start) may help too. |
No problems reading messages here.
I am still working on Alaska - slow going this week due to baby boy deciding he is going to try walking less than a month after learning to crawl. Sheesh. Think someone is in a bit of a rush to grow up?? I will have it done by weekend and posted on Sunday - I will be perpetually but happily behind! :D |
We didn't get much snow last night, but the wind calmed down then back up today. However, we quilters always manage to get to the shops. Spent the day going to one yarn shop and two quilt shops and ate lunch at a really neat place. Now I'm pleasantly tired and ready to settle down for the evening. Need to finish my Bible reading for the day and harass the DH, lol.

Sounds like a fun trip. Today I'm going out looking for the snowy owl which has been seen in numbers in our area and which is very unusual.

Here is my Alaska Star. I finally got the book, which I find very handy for the cutting charts. I have been using Foundation Factory to print the patterns.

We have thousands of Canada geese that winter here. Huge flocks graze near ponds and rivers. The locals feed them corn as well. There are some that stay here all year long. One in particular has mated with a duck and produced the ugliest gooduck you ever saw. It is against the law to shoot them, thank goodness.
