Jan, I have the red clips and love them! Why didn't I think to use them for this? I thought I was the only one who struggled with pinning, and I am getting better at it after doing these two blocks. But on the next one, yes, I'm definitely trying the clips instead.

Ok here are my 2. That Aimee was a bear lol....I am making 10 inch blocks. I find it is easier for me and I am really enjoying these blocks. The Aimee block, I don't know what I did and I was so careful but somehow I lost a half inch somewhere all around the block, so I will have to add a frame around it later but that is ok, it will just be different. I am going for a 80x120 size for a twin. Thank you Honchy for doing this.

Rosy, the blocks are so pretty in floral fabric..:) How are you enlarging the patterns?
|
Another group of beautiful blocks. Great job!
Rosy - your Aimee is wonderful! I love it - floral, solid and batik! Anything goes with these blocks! |

Cooky, to make it easier, instead of pins use the little red Clover Clips. Still use a pin to find the point then put a clip on either side of the pin, remove pin, add more clips if seam is long then sew. The clips will slip off as you get to them. Pins can too easily distort the fabric & paper (not to mention sticking your finger). I got slammed on another thread because someone thought the clips are an expensive waste of money. My response to that: "bleep". If I get the desired results and find an easier way to do it it's worth the money. I got a box of the clips on Amazon for under $20; you can get some at Joanne's with a coupon for less than $10. Just a suggestion to make paper piecing easier and more enjoyable!

They also make great cat toys... Every now and then I have to look under the couch to retrieve all of my clips. Sigh. No progress on the fw blocks last night, but lots on the baby quilt. :) might set that aside for tonight to do some work on Addie though. :)

husky, you're still right on schedule as we don't show the next two blocks until the 11th. I'm tempted to start on the them now, but have to be a grown-up and do some machine maintenance first.

Rosy, I agree; Aimee was a bear! But here she is to join Addie. The colors look brighter here, but the red and blue are the same fabric in all the red/yellow/blue blocks I'll be doing. The calico is vintage on this one.

My book didn't come yesterday :( maybe today, but I may not get to these until the weekend. But I'll catch up. Love them all so far.

Cooky, you're sewing these blocks like a pro. :)
I hope you're enjoying the show.. you'll catch up soon enough.. I have block base and it's a pain to try & find the blocks by the right name.. I'm working ahead on some of the blocks...I'm going to NC in another week? and I may not have time to do some right away..I get very busy with the Village Stitchers down there and they're raffling off a Patriotic Quilt I put together for the Wounded Warriors Leave program...I hope they make a lot of money on it.. Back to the machine for me.... |

JaneH, are you paperpiecing or "regular" piecing?
I am in absolute awe of the blocks shown so far and they're all beautiful. I think if I had someone sitting beside me and telling me what I'm doing wrong, then maybe I could do it, but evidently this is just beyond me. |
Jane, it sounds like you're doing traditional patchwork and not paper piecing. There's no way I could do these blocks without paper piecing, since you're just sewing over the lines marked on the paper. Some in the group say they're hand sewing, and I'm in absolute awe of them.
Husky, you're right! Highly over-rated. :D Honchey, thanks. I actually enjoy the precision of the process, not aiming for perfection but for the best I can do at the time. Hope your quilt brings a high bid for such a worthy cause! |

Honchey, sometimes, she just leaves something out of the name, like grandma favorite, she will just say grandma....now if you do the wildcard search in BB, it will bring up the block if any of the words match and so far I have been able to find both. Aimee, comes right up. Addie came up as, Aunt Addie's album.....and so on. Some I might not find but I know bb inside and out, I use it a lot.

Addie is done and will do the next one tomorrow. No sewing today. Had an appointment with my new best friend. An Oncologist . Choose a treatment course for the breast cancer but the PET scan picked up a very small tumor in my lower lobe of the Left lung. Waiting for appointment for a needle biopsy now. Piecing these blocks and others will keep my mind off all else. I can really get lost in my fabrics. |

Here's a new Aimee. When I looked at the photograph I took, I noticed that I'd gotten the fabric in the center switched around, so I made a new one. The first one I made will end up on the back of the quilt, I'm sure to be joined by other re-do's along the way.

I'd like to also send prayers and good wishes to gramdme26!

Since this is my first time joining a sew along club like this, I am having a heck of a time. Aimee is so confusing. I don't understand how the alphabet for one step changes at the next step. Those tiny guideline directions say to connect "B" to "A", and so on. B and A can't go together because they meet at their points. I have been at this for quite a while, and I think I can put the block together "my" way. There just does not appear to have enough instructions. Am I missing something??????

Well, I have run out of excuses, so I will post my first two...wrong side and right side as it might help some one out there struggling with the blocks....I do use the templates, punch out the light cardboard to show the seam allowances, cut out the pieces and use them in paper piecing to sew on back wards to most folks way of thinking...gut it works for me. Good luck to everyone. Loved all the blocks shown on this adventure.

I letter the puzzle pieces like the book, then a different colored ink for the templates, and different color for the pp, and put it together by sections. JanRn suggested a folder and flip the puzzle over to put it together...seems to work when I tried it.

Sometimes I think it would be easier to have hand-sewn this! For paper-piecing, do you cut with the seam allowance or cut the actual size? I've never done paper piecing, but saw a few videos on YouTube and would be willing to try it...maybe. Right now, I'm looking at it all in the rubbish bin and have just finished off a nice glass of wine! Tomorrow is another day.

Grandme, I'll keep you in my prayers. I also find that concentrating on putting the blocks together requires my full attention, and I like that too. I love the print you chose for Addie and can't wait to see the rest of your blocks!
|
sweet, I think you're on the right track. I'm also looking at all the pieces, reading what she says to do, and then going right ahead and doing what I want to do. Makes me feel like a rebel!
|
Oh Judy (Grandme), many thoughts and prayers for this new challenge. Sorry you have to go through it. I agree that sewing is good therapy for all that tests us.
QuiltingNinaSue, thank you for showing the back of your block. I was going to ask to see one to get an idea of how they should look. Pretty blocks everyone! |
Sweet, if you place your completed pieces paper side up you can then put them in the order (A to B, AB to C, etc) as shown in the sample. I don't read the directions but look at the order of the sample. I lay them out on a file folder, close it and flip it so it's fabric side up. I can see if I've sewn any pieces wrong (never happens LOL) and fix the mistake before I start to sew the sections together. Is this clear as mud????
What a nice variety of blocks shown--and they're all so nicely done. If any of you are rookies at paper piecing it doesn't show. Great job everyone! |

It bothered me that Aimee didn't come out the right size, so I printed out a 10.5 size pattern and made the this one. I made this and the first one with templates. The second one came out a bit bigger, so I have to admit it was me and not the templates lol.....I made a tut for anyone who is having a problem with this one, this may help you. First, cut all your patches and leave the template on top, especially the the middle blade without a point, this template can get turned around. Now working on the middle part, line up your blades and sew them together and then join the middle seam. Start sewing the sides, there are two with a little triangle on each side and then the other two sides with two tri's on each side. Sew the sides with the one tri on each side first, then sew the sides on with the two tri's on. Then it's time to add the corners and your done.

Still mad at Amiee lol...I printed out a custom pp. I pp the whole block and it went together so smoothly, I now have three Aimee blocks lol.....here are the pp, I creased all the lines, then here are all the parts. I tore the paper off and put the block together. I don't read instruction either. I just look at it and I can see the way it's gonna work for me lol.

Rosy those are both beautiful. Thanks for all your tips!

JanRN, just wanted to let you know that I tried the red Clover clips instead of pinning. Wow!! What a difference. This is definitely the way I'll do this from now on. Thanks for sharing such a great tip!
