Such cute blocks! I think it would be interesting to read the comments from the Farmer's wives in the book. What are the differences between the two books, besides that the one for this group has 99 blocks and the other book has 111 blocks? From the blurbs on Amazon it seems like they were basically the same book, except the author offered a different setting with fewer blocks in this book. Well, I succumbed and ordered it. It will be a late start, but just noticed the thread this week and agreed it would be fun to make a ton of little 6" blocks!

JeanieG 08-08-2015 08:24 PM

klgreene - your blocks turned out just beautiful. You caught up in a flash!

givio - This is Laurie Hird's 3rd Farmer's Wife Book. The first one was The Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt, the second was The Farmer's Wife Pony Club Quilt. As a group here on Quilting Board we have made the first two in previous years. This book has different blocks from the previous two books. I am so glad you are going to join this group, we have a lot of fun.

Can't wait to get started, have bought a few things this weekend, per everyone suggestions, colored pencils, binder protectors, glue sticks and bottle of wine, now if my book would get here I would b already, even cleaned my quilting room found my old iron that doesn't do steam as per the videos I have also watched, did I mention I am still waiting on my book, lol, just a little humor along the way, can't wait, hope when I return from Virginia this week back to Jersey my book will be there, do little catch up. Did anyone else join the same group from Fat Quarters Shop they start theirs in September, a little more confusing then this one, they are going to be doing them from easyest to most difficulty, they as well are talking about using templates instead of pp, sounds like a big expense to me, will be selling templates on line.

JeanieG 08-08-2015 09:50 PM

Teri - I print out the templates from the CD onto cardstock. I cut them out and use the cardstock to trace around for the blocks that I will not be PP. No need to purchase the online ones.

What is FWS?
Never mind...just realized what this is all about..Farmer's Wife Sampler.

CookyIN 08-09-2015 03:11 AM

Beautiful blocks, kl! Glad your book finally arrived.

It's so much fun seeing all the lovely fabrics and how different they make the blocks look.

katybob 08-09-2015 04:34 AM

Great blocks, KL. Now on to Alice and Ann!

janRN 08-09-2015 04:38 AM

Givio, as Jeanie pointed out, all the books are different. FWS features letters to the editor of why farmers' wives would or wouldn't want their daughters to be farmers' wives; FWS Pony club was letters from children telling why they wanted to win a pony. As a city gal (as evidenced by my using donkeys instead of ponies in FWS Pony quilt LOL) I learned a lot and a gained a whole lot of respect for farmers. Plus this is a fun group-join us!

Great variations in color, ladies--the blocks take on a different look and I like all of them. Looking forward to Tuesday and new blocks!

Klgreene, Your blocks are lovely, so soft & pretty...Happy to see all the followers..I've been busy cutting fabric & pinning to paper then into the baggies...I am so organized I can't believe it..:D

Pam P 08-09-2015 05:14 AM

Nice blocks KL, I do think we got some of the same fabrics from Keepsake Quilting, it's neat to see how they turn out with different choices. I did buy some more brighter Kona solids on sale at Hancock last week to brighten it up some and I was happy with the colors they had.

I like to review the posts from time to time because after doing the blocks something I read previously will make more sense to me (aha moment). Quiltingninasue, are you saying that you use the templates to trace and cut your fabric and then use the pp templates to sew them? I sure do waste a lot of fabric and wonder if that would help me. Going to get my clover clips today.

Honchey 08-09-2015 06:29 AM

Pam, I believe QNS uses the fabric cut from the templates then sews them onto the pping foundation paper sections...the templates are a guide to the shape & size of the fabric needed..I always cut mine bigger then trim after sewing them. I'll take some photos later to show you what I mean...

Pam P 08-09-2015 06:48 AM

Thanks Honchey, you did post photos on the last thread explaining this but I thought you used your pp templates to measure. I was afraid I would tear them doing it that way. I was thinking I might be able to get pieces cut and bagged ahead of time this way, not confuse the templates with the pp ones and not waste so much. Hope this makes sense.

huskyquilter 08-09-2015 07:43 AM

Well, I'm excited to say I finished Addie yesterday, and got part of Aimee done yesterday. I'm hoping to finish her up tonight as well as get started on the next one, I'll post pix once I have both finished. I haven't looked yet, who is number 3?

Honchey 08-09-2015 08:32 AM

If a pping section is too hard to fold, especially the many angled ones, I will use the templates to cut the fabric.

Next week is Alice & Ann...with Alice, I cut strips a little wider than the pieces then used the strip as I sewed & cut.

klgreene 08-09-2015 08:47 AM

Thanks everyone for the compliments. I'm also working on " Loyal Union Sampler". I've been wanting to do both quilts for a long time, so decided to do both at the same time. So it's a wide variety of fabrics. But all are 6" blocks, so I pull out and cut strips for two blocks at a time. And most are either 2 1/2" or 3 1/2" strips, and what I don't use of that strip goes into my box that I'm making a adding machine tape quilt as well. It's a way of using up some scraps. I'm also working on the Row by Row Experience. So I'm busy, busy, busy, and it's all different so I never get bored.

Honchey 08-09-2015 09:02 AM

For Ann, I used the templates to cut the fabric pieces, then pinned the fabric to the pping sections..I just used a rectangular piece of fabric for the middle section.

QuiltingNinaSue 08-09-2015 11:41 AM

Yes, Pam P, I do use the templates glued on light cardboard stock from Wal Mart, cut out the templates and punch holes for seam allowances, and use that pattern for paper piecing, so it 'fits' real good in its pp place and I can control everything better. Partly because of my lack of vision, and partly because I do not want to waste fabric. Not everyone does it this way, its personal preferences. What ever way is comfortable to you, is what you should do, try this and that of the tips given to you, and see how you like it, and if its comfortable to you.

Texas_Sue 08-09-2015 12:00 PM

QuiltingNinaSue:

What a great idea. I did a lot of trial and error on Addie. I've PP before but for some reason it all went out of my head when I started.

The photos shown are not of Ann. I used Ann templates for an example.

1. fabric cut using template.. notice the extra seam allowance.

2. purple fabric pinned to pping section with the second piece of fabric pinned thru the stitching line to flip to see if it fits and is lined up correctly..I fussy cut the print fabric.

3. it fits perfectly..

4. another section with the print fabric fussy cut...

5. the template marked Ann 4F has the arrow going on the straight of fabric so the checks won't be cock-eyed.

the template marked Anne 4D also has a straight sewing line so I lined it up with the straight of the fabric.

the template marked Ann 4 B is an example of what I use to fussy cut a piece of fabric.. it's picture frame of
what you want to showcase.. I place a pin at a point where I want it to meet with the point of the pping
section.

Pam P 08-09-2015 01:05 PM

Perfect! Thank you both so much. I will work with and let you know how I do.

I finished them up tonight. For my first time pp.. not to bad. Now I hope I can get the picture on here.

QuiltingNinaSue 08-10-2015 05:07 AM

Gayle's quillts, the blocks look great. I am looking forward to see more blocks from you.

I love all the variety of blocks posted here; everyone's blocks are looking great with great color and form starts. Makes the journey a pleasure and exciting to see them each week. Tomorrow is the day we get to see the next blocks. I can hardly wait!

katybob 08-10-2015 05:14 AM

"Not too bad", Gayle? Looks like you've been pp-ing for years! Those are lovely. I love that sweet green fabric you used for Addie.

huskyquilter 08-10-2015 05:53 AM

Everyone's blocks look so great! I finished mine, but was so tired I didn't take pictures. I also noticed that it seems the ink from the templates was rubbing off on my fabric, I used a laser printer. Will this come off, or am I going to have to redo them? :(

Here's my Addie block.

Texas_Sue 08-10-2015 06:45 AM

Can someone tell me how to get a big picture to post?

katybob 08-10-2015 07:46 AM

Can't help you with getting your picture bigger, Texas Sue. Mine are big to begin with and I'm not sure I could make them smaller! That's a great Addie -- love the colors!

Texas_Sue 08-10-2015 07:56 AM

Never mind - I found something I hope works under help

Texas_Sue 08-10-2015 08:04 AM

The green points look more like blue on this picture. Thanks for looking at it.

Susan

givio 08-10-2015 08:19 AM

Texas_Sue, Put your picture in your Paint program, click on 'resize' in the menu, then increase the percentage to make the picture the size you like, save the file, and use that to post.

My book is in the mail from Amazon! :-)

Texas_Sue 08-10-2015 08:48 AM

Thank you!

Honchey 08-10-2015 09:21 AM

I'm so happy to see the great looking blocks from the "new to pping" gals. I'm pleased as punch to know you're getting the "hang of it".. I'm putting the finishing touches on Ann today..

I like to scan my blocks..I can make better adjustments to the color that way..no blurs or flash lights..

Why is it I can't find any orange 30"s fabric???

Husky, why not try getting some of the smeared ink on a piece of scrap and see if it comes out.Maybe try some Oxiclean on a q-tip or toothbrush.. What kind of paper are you using with the toner..I think that might be the problem..the ink isn't being absorbed and is just "laying" on the paper the way some ball point pens smear on glossy paper...Anyone have a solution??

I think this one is a little bigger???

katybob 08-10-2015 10:02 AM

Definitely bigger. And greener! I thought your fabric was turquoise til I saw this photo. Cute fabric.

JeanieG 08-10-2015 10:23 AM

Anne - This is a link to the Bella Solids Color Chart. In checking with my actual color chart, I find the colors are not as vibrant as in "real" life. But it may give you some ideas. They have color charts for Kona solids also.

I wish I could remember where I heard this but, we should not print pp pages on a laser printer ~~~ always use inkjet!
When I went to office depot to try to get my book spiraled (they would not cut off the book for some reason), they said they could print from the cd on their laser printer. I chose not to have them do it. In retrospect, it may be a good thing to have a complete copy of the cd spiral bound for reference.
Can anyone here help out with a better answer to the laser printer pp problem?

JeanieG 08-10-2015 11:41 AM

sweet - I had heard that you should not print pp pages on a laser printer also. I also had my book spiral bound - makes it so much easier to use when it lays flat!!

Texas_Sue 08-10-2015 11:53 AM

katybob - I got all my favorite 30's in one place and hope not to duplicate too many of the blocks.

Susan

Honchey 08-10-2015 12:15 PM

Hi Jeanie, I was referring to print fabrics.. I was bidding on some on E bay but now it's above what I want to spend..

Texas sue, Bigger is better.:D

QuiltingNinaSue 08-10-2015 12:44 PM

I have some to share, Honchey. Sorry about the full PM folder, I think I have cleared it now.
