Thanks DublB, though I'm not the only as many of the Ladies did FWS already. I'm just one of the latecomers! I did a few last June, none in the summer, and didn't really get committed til the end of September. Now I'm trying to get FWS done before we get too far into PC. I think it'd be too difficult to try to keep two colour/fabric schemes in my brain! Then last night when I went to trim up the FWS block, I tried to trim it at 8-1/2" ... hhmmmm didn't work! And then soon remembered oh yes, I'm back at FWS. However, that's kind of scary, as if I trim a PC to FWS sizes ... YIKES! A good reason to get finished FWS!! .... 21 to go! :)

Your blocks are great! What a great job you've done with the fussy cutting. I really like the "antique" look of the fabrics you're using.

This is a beautiful version of a dandy. It took a little while for me to see that it was the same block. I like it a lot. I'm going to try a similar version. Very creative.

Here are two versions of "A Dandy". Still have not decided on a material. Chris likes the gray. He says the blue and yellow looks like carnival colors. I think the gray is too close in color to each other and blurs the pattern. I am on my way to Aardvark C to possibly find some new material and then on to Lancaster county. I have reproduction 30s fabric that I am considering for this quilt but I have always wanted to do a 30s themed pattern with that fabric. decisions decisions?

oksewglad 01-07-2012 08:04 AM

Leba, yellow and blue is such a great color combination and yours is no exception. The yellow fabric is gorgeous, what fabric line is it from?

Our posts must've crisscrossed as I didn't see the second pic. Tell Chris it is hard to judge a whole quilt like this by just one block. The second color way is definitely calmer. Looking forward to your next blocks to see what you come up with.

QuiltE 01-07-2012 08:29 AM

Leba ... ITA ... it's hard to compete with yellow and blue! However, you can both win .... mix and match the five fabrics you've started with and those alone would be a great combo. And you could find lots more fabrics to go with these if you want more of a scrappy look.

ITA with OKSGlad you really can't decide based on one block. Yes, as Chris said, the first looks more carnival-like than the 2nd, but it would tone down fast if not used in every block, and would add the zip and punch you need to keep some life to the quilt.

Have fun shopping ... and perhaps when you come home you'll have found a whole different sent of fabrics and will be making a 3rd A Dandy! :)

One of the advantages of being late is seeing everyone's blocks--they are awesome!! Each one is beautiful. Here are my first two I hope; haven't posted pics on new site yet. Now I can't wait to see next week's beauties.

" Giverny" from the classically home collection by Marianne Elizabeth for www.benertex.com. I also have it in Burgundy and cream. I got it from aardvark c quilt shop about 3 years ago.

You are right I got a whole new set of fabric. Never made it to Lancaster. I will try again next week.

Oh Jan, so good to see you here! We've missed you! Your blocks are just gorgeous, love those flowers! Great job on the fussy cut center. Hopefully I'll have mine done soon.

Oh Jan, that rose block is simply gorgeous! I didn't notice the oak leaf/acorn fabric until QE pointed it out in the other block. FYI the ok in my name stands for Oak Knob the name of our farm, so I go a little overboard on oak leaves and acorns. Just goes to show how lovely that rose block is.
Keep them coming everyone! I got an AAQI quilt done last night instead of sewing this little beauties.

dublb 01-07-2012 02:02 PM

Jan I'm so glad to see you here. The hardest thing I've ever done was when I was my DFIL & DMIL'S caregiver. My prayers are with ya. Your blocks are lovely.

Blues and whites always look so nice together! Well Done!
Later on, I bet you'll be ready to tackle A Beauty and will get a beautiful block ... the beauty awaits for you!

Try posting it in a separate post and see if you can get it to work. Good Luck!

I don't think it is possible to paper piece "A Beauty", that is why the PP pattern was not included in the CD. You have to use the templates for this one. I think that is why you had the problem.

Honchey, Gardnergal 970, Janie, Quilt E, dublb, Cokie LM, Mirabelle, Anael, JanRN, Wendiq and Leba:
Your blocks are amazing, real eye candy. Love the colors and fabrics each of you picked for these blocks. All the same blocks, but so different!
I have A Dandy done, and after studying all the possibilities with the Y seams I decided to EPP A Beauty. I have half block done. It is the very first time I am doing EPP, let's see... Hope to have pictures by tomorrow.

here in my material for now. not sure this is the right place to post this picture. Please let me know. I am not crazy about the material so most likely it will change.

Perfect for a Cowgirl quilt. Love the pink cowbirl hats!! The fabric will make a beautiful quilt!!!

janRN 01-08-2012 06:26 PM

Wendiq I agree with QuiltE-blue and white always looks great-love your block. Leba how cute your blocks are! Love the pink and the way you pieced your Beauty block. I'm always amazed at how talented everyone here is.
JeanieG, you're right. There's no paper piecing for Beauty (except English pp which I have no clue how to do) but the templates were spot on--they fit perfectly together.

dublb 01-08-2012 08:11 PM

Blue is my favorite color. That blue & white block is awesome! My DGD would love those pink ponies. DD said that she would never put her DD in pink... well... her DD almost always wants pink.:D (I like pink also.) Love the ponies.

That's going to make for one cute girlie-girl quilt!
And the chocolate brown not only goes nicely with it, but is so "in" right now!

Leba 01-09-2012 04:31 AM

Quilte thanks for the encouragement. I don't ever feel comfortable with my choice of colors. Of the quilts that I have made, the ones I like most are the ones that I purchased as kits where the fabric is pre-selected. I made a quilt for my son and I tried many color combinations. He finally told me that he wanted navy blue and black. I thought what a strange color combination, but I went along with it. It was one of my best quilts. It suited him and he loved it. Bear paw was the block I used and I attached all of his boy scout badges. Most of all I liked the feel of the hand dyed material.

As I was afraid about all those Y seams I decided to English Paper Piecing A Beauty. It was a challenge and my very first attempt to EPP.
I'm happy with the result but... I need to redo the botton right triangle.
Next time I will try the Freezer Paper method.
Thanks for looking.

QuiltE 01-09-2012 03:38 PM

Leba ... Join the crowd!! I'm not colour/fabric choice confident ... though I am getting better! FWS has taught me a lot ... though I know I have a long way to go. At least I can say I feel like I'm getting better. So jump in and as you go along the PC trail, keep asking yourself, what do I like ... what could I do next block to make it even better. You'll have some favourites, and you'll have some Oh My, what was I thinking! They're just part of the experience!!! .... and those ones you think are horrors, will surprise you how lovely they look when mixed in with the whole bunch.

ARteEC ... ooooohhh sew lovely!! I really like the vibrance contrasted with the subtleness of the two blocks. And look forward to when you mix and match the two in another block!

Lovely blocks! I really like your fabric choices! I believe this BOW is going to make us all better quilters! New (to us) blocks, & different techniques. Fun! :)

oksewglad 01-09-2012 08:54 PM

Oh such pretty additions, the pinks/browns are spot on. I wonder, Leba, whether you might want to add another light neutral on the order of that pretty fabric with the swirls to balance your color selection. Check your stash there might be something that works perfectly.
AeC--as QE said great contrast!
Only week 1 and many are starting to learn new techniques, way to go. dublb, since starting the FWS I know I am a better piecer, too.
Two more days and two more blocks--I'm almost as excited as you folks who are doing all the sewing!!

Yes, with the 6" blocks, the squares and triangles were very tiny!

Leba 01-10-2012 04:50 AM

Arte I love your colors and your technique. Your points are sharp and crisp. Definitely a goal for me to strive for. I am looking forward to seeing the rest of your blocks in the upcoming weeks.

Bev I agree with you. I thought more of neutral color was needed to balance the bright pinks. I was thinking of adding more of the same neutral swirls but your idea of looking in my stash is a good one. I dont think I have anything that will match but last night I was looking through my collection and I was surprized by all the fabric that I forgot about. I brought 2 baskets of scraps upstairs from the basement. I will have to go treasure hunting. Thanks for the suggestion.
