New Quilting Bee March, 2017

Can you believe it’s March already? The year is sure moving on. Seems everyone is enjoying this. There’s going to be some very pretty tops by the end of the year. Keep having fun.

The one stipulation is that when you have made your block, you must post a picture(s) in order to be in the next month. The blocks will be 10” finished.

This month's blocks have been chosen by Chasezzz (Karen). Thank you, great patterns.

We welcome new participants. Just send me a PM or post on the New Bee for the month and I will make note that you would like to join. I hope that everyone who wishes to join, stays with us for the year. Even if you have to play catch-up, one block is all it takes to stay in.

Chasezzz, Such pretty blocks you choose and made. It will be fun deciding what colors to use and do. Weekend project.

Chasezzz 03-01-2017 12:25 PM

AnngelAnn...I purposely picked one block with no HSTs or FG!

Oksewnsew 03-01-2017 12:53 PM

I have mine on machine... Gotta rest a few, snack on a piece of Coconut Cake....:)

This is my first attempt at his block. I have been trying to use up batik scraps so many of the fabrics I chose tend to make this block look different. Mmmmmm...coconut cake!!! Jan

Oksewnsew 03-01-2017 01:39 PM

Boy, ya'all are so fast.. I'm beginning to think I could post a new block a week and it'd make ya happy...hahaha Glad to see you enjoying the blocks so far.. Very pretty choices of prints too. MMMMmmm, the cake IS good...

JuanitaBean 03-01-2017 03:53 PM

Nice Blocks Chasezz and Cheeshead. Hope to get started on mine at least pick fabric tonight.

I love coconut cake it's my favorite. Eat a piece for me.

AnngelAnne 03-01-2017 04:03 PM

Well, that made me feel better, I only looked at them this morning when the thread was first posted and to see some already done and looking terrific sure got me going. Now I know why you are done so fast, but what a great job you did.

You purposely did a good job, lol, I'm up for the challenge and now I have yours to use for an example.

Kassaundra 03-01-2017 04:08 PM

That second one strips and squares would look cool w/ the strips ombre'd light to dark (dark outside to light inside), then ombre the background dark to light (dark center to light outside). I need to see if I have an ombre that changes in the right length of space.

Nice blocks Chasezzz and Cheesehead!

Also, thanks Chasezzz for your selection of blocks.

I guess you best start with the second one and do this idea of yours. I am not following it well and think I need a visual, lol. I love seeing what people come up with, it takes me a month of Sundays to figure out patterns and color schemes.

Just finished the second block and I am not happy with my fabric choices. May have to ditch the idea of working with the batik scraps to a more uniform fabric pattern. Jan

Sorry, I don't happen to agree with you. I think it is a striking block. It looks very good to me. So carry on, you are doing well!!

Cheesehead 03-02-2017 12:41 PM

Thanks Anngel!

Jan

Kassaundra 03-02-2017 04:12 PM

I think the block is fine. It looks like you might be disappointed w/ the lack of contrast. I think if you made the small squares out of the dark fushia fabric and the narrow rectangles out of the light print, the contrast would be more striking, you might be happier w/ it.

Chasezzz 03-02-2017 04:20 PM

Jan, I like the block, but think it might be better if the light was the background fabric (center of all squares) and the two fabrics closer in tone were used for the "frames." I did another block in my group of fabrics that didn't have the "celtic knot" look either because of my choices of fabric position. Made the block look totally different...not bad, just different!

Cheesehead 03-02-2017 04:30 PM

Thanks for the input Kassaundra and Chasezzz. I agree, there wasn't enough contrast and I'm sure that's why I was somewhat disappointed in the result of the block. I'm not giving up, I will try to do this block again with hopefully better results. Jan

Oksewnsew 03-03-2017 06:50 AM

Thanks for sharing - :(. Just enjoy it for me..:) I think Winter just flat forgot us - trees are leafing out, roses are fully leafed, Jonquils blooming, Bradford Pears are almost through blooming, some already turning green!! "HEY, Nature, it's tooooo early for all this green!!"

Delphina 03-03-2017 09:39 AM

Oh yes a block a week would be good for me!

Here are my new blocks for March. Decided that trying to work with scraps for batiks was more of a bother so I chose different fabrics that I will continue to use from now on.

Marilynn, so glad this Cheesehead is not in Wisconsin at this time. I don't miss the snow or cold one bit. We will return in May to hopefully better weather, but I can recall a dandy snowfall in May about 25 years ago. Jan

Cheesehead...I really like the new colors a whole lot better. Of course, I am very partial to any shade of purple.

I love anything with any shade of purple. Love it , makes me thin of spring

chickadeee55 03-03-2017 02:22 PM

Cheesehead, I was wondering if your name was in relation to WI! But yeah, winter last here right up to Spring, we can never be surprised with snow in April. I think of the tulips popping up through the snow. That is why we love to quilt, gets our mind off the long winters.

Love your blocks.

Okay I couldn't get the ombre idea out of my head, so I was stuck inside today w/ men working on lines in the back yard w/ backhoes and other big equipment so I had to try it out. (should have been cleaning, but we all know how that goes) My first thought was to ombre the same colors the bars going dark to light and the background going light to dark. But when I got everything cut and laid out it just looked jumbled not ombre'd. So then I changed it up to two colors. I like the effect pretty well and think if they were done so that the colors were alternated (purple bars on one block then yellow bars on the next, or whatever 2 colors someone was using) it could look really cool. Anyway not sure what I'm going to do w/ one orphan 8 inch block, in purple and yellow, but here it is. Oh and I included a pic of the back of the block just b/c I was so pleased w/ how it turned out too. lol lol lol

Gorgeous block ladies! I might have time next week to get my fabrics out. Thanks for making some great pattern choices for us. This 'sampler' is going to be beautiful together!

Chasezzz 03-04-2017 04:44 AM

Cheesehead...loving the purple blocks! So cool. Great blocks too Delphina and Kassaundra! So glad these patterns are working out.

Oksewnsew 03-04-2017 06:49 AM

Gorgeous purple blocks - like Barb says 'I like anything purple' (or pink). Glad everyone is enjoying these blocks.

Sauki1 03-04-2017 08:36 AM

Can't wait to get some time to sit down and do them. I'm only going to have a couple more available for my real and red as I'm running out of fabric. But, I'll find a new color combo for the remainder of the year. 😀 Blocks look great ladies!

Here are my blocks I didn't enjoy doing the strips and squares. Pieces a tad to small for me. All of the block pieces have been smaller than I like, but I am having fun making them. Happy we only do a couple a month lol. They are a challenge for me that is for sure.

It is really cold and windy here. Even my snowman is depressed. I put some island clothes on him and put him in the sun

Oksewnsew 03-04-2017 02:21 PM

Oh those are pretty. and I love your Snowman. We've clouded over and quite windy and cool now. Guess we're supposed to have 'drizzle' tonite and tomorrow, still in high 50's/60. I need to post pic of my blocks. I got them made Thurs, forgot to post.

retiredteacher09 03-04-2017 05:16 PM

Pretty blocks, everyone.

Delphina: Small pieces are a challenge but your blocks look nice. I like your color combinations.

Hi everyone. Thanks Chasezzz for picking these blocks. Must admit that Broken Dishes wasn't a fun one to put together, had a bit of an issue with the middle blocks, but I do like the finished product (just ignore the loose threads) .

Delphina I do like your blocks, very nice.

Cheesehead 03-06-2017 04:32 AM

Delphina and Diane your blocks turned out very pretty! It's been so much fun seeing everyone's blocks being done, all of those blocks are going to make beautiful quilts. Everyone has been doing such a great job!

Since I started my new colorway I have been playing catch up and doing the past two months blocks over. I'm almost done, just one more to do. Jan
