It still turned out really well. I think you would have had a stronger look if you had used more of a contrast in the center blocks. Maybe the purple you used in the corners repeated in the center. The way it reads now your green blends into the center somewhat. It is still a great looking block!

Have been watching this post almost from the beginning. Tried one of the blocks awhile back, Pinwheel Crossroads from Wk 2. Didn't come out too bad, other than a few wrinkles, for not using any templates. I was too embarassed to ask for them after not doing much with the templates for the keychains. I'm not really a pink person, but these scraps were laying around. klgreene, love your color combinations!

Thank you EC for the compliment. I think this turned out really nice. I like the color combination. I had to checkle, because I did that block too, but with the different fabrics they all look so different. I that that about these blocks. Hope you are making more, and post your pictures.

Here' s another one.... This is week 9, Emily. I thought this one was going to be hard, until I started it. It was really pretty easy. As you can see, I'm not doing these in any order. I just keep on keeping on. And having fun doing it.

The hardest part about the KDs is getting the seams to meet where it comes to a V shape. You did an excellent job on that. The key to getting them to come together right is to trim your center exactly the same in each block. It makes it easier to get the centers to line up.

If anyone has a problem with getting them to line up I use a tack and tack the two seams together before I sew the two blocks together. You can gently pull the two edges of the blocks together if one is shorter than the other. then they will match up better.

I must confess tho Katie these fabrics wouldn't be my first choice. But you got the contrast going so it is a good quilt block!! I think I am stuck on country prints!! LOL

I love batik's and have been using a lot of my "Scrap's". So I try to go with colors that do blend. The teal in this picture is the exact color in the brown fabric. And I do think they look better in real life. These pictures make them look a little bolder than they actually are. My biggest problem is that I love all the fabrics, just depends on my mood for the day. I love all color scheme's but not all of them will look good in this sampler in my bedroom. I have material for a purple quilt. It won't match anything in my house, but I just love the fabrics.

I never knew what batiks were til I got on this board. I'm still not crazy about them but I am getting used to seeing them. I tend to be too old fashioned I guess. I like the older styles. I know that when I piece I don't like a fabric that is "splotchy" I need the fabric to not have highlighted areas. some fabrics have areas that are lighter in spots and darker in spots and for me that doesn't work for what I do. I want the overall look to have a solid appearance. Don't know if I am explaining this very well. But it is my view of color and not meant for anyone else. Each to their own.

This was the first quilt I machine sewed after a long break from hand quilting. It was a kit, came with the fabrics. When I first saw the fabrics, I wasn't sure either what it would look like because I had only done country prints years ago. But when I got it done, and had it quilted (unfortunately I didnt do the quilting - wish I could) I fell in love witht the batik's. There are a lot of these in my sampler blocks :D

Your quilt is going to be georgious. Every block you have made is amazing.

Thanks CJ, the more I get done, the more I want to get it finished, but yet I don't want to stop making these blocks.

Beautiful quilt! There have been some batiks I can say I liked. I can see the attraction but I think they work for big quilts but not for my small stuff. You lose the print in the tiny. Batics are too big a print for me.

klgreene 12-02-2010 03:20 PM

That's why even the same patterns looks so different with different fabrics. But that's what I like about quilting. If I'm making something for someone in particular, the fabric reflex's them. My sister makes absolutely beauitful quilts. Very traditional, small prints, and I want them all. But when I go to make the same pattern, even though she and I have the same colorscheme, everything looks so different. Because of the different fabric styles. Boy this would be a boring world if we all liked the same things.

Here we go again. I was starting to go thru withdrawals because I hadn't done one of your blocks last week, had a billion other things to do. But here is Wk 21, Audrey.

By the way Rhonda, on your dresden plate, I can make that smaller by just extending the small end can't I. I'm not going to use the dresden plate I made and put on here, I'm going to make that the center of a miniature, but want tiny ones all around it. Make sense????? I think I'm starting to loose it. LOL

Nice block and I love your color choices on this one. Course I like a lot of contrast so that is a given that I like this! LOL

Yes you could make a copy of the template and cut it in half and shape the top in a shape you like. I used a jar to get the rounded shape. The only hard part is makeing sure the sides are the same length so the points where it starts to curve are the same on both sides.

Do you want some suggestions on how to make it straighter? It came out well! I can just see a few things that will help get a better finished look when you sew them together. the biggest thing is your white points don't look like they have a 1/4" seam allowance. but it may just be the way it is laying too.

klgreene 12-15-2010 02:56 PM

Just measured, there is 1/4" it just doesn't look like it in the picture. The wonky part if the inside red and two white spots. So far all the blocks that I've started sashings on look good, so I don't think this one will be a problem.

I thought I might post these pictures to give you an idea of what I'm doing with your blocks. I put sashing on two sides to make them look like attic windows, then when I QAYG I'll be putting a thin black strip between them. I made more than I need, but took out the really bright ones. Now I'll let my DH see if there are any that he thinks doesn't go. He has a pretty good eye. They aren't in any order, just the way I put them down. But I thought I'd give you an idea of what your hard work is doing. Thanks Rhonda!

Oh, and we don't want to know what the rest of my room looks like since I had so much, STUFF, on the bed. LOL

Day Bed with blocks placed on it.

Just look at all the techniques you learned doing these blocks! That was why I did this to encourage people to try my methods.

I'm so glad you have enjoyed making the quilt blocks!
Now you can take these techniques and use them on anything you want to.

klgreene 12-20-2010 09:36 AM

The only problem with that is that, now I want to do a million things, but I certainly do look at quilts and quilt blocks a lot different. Thanks!

Ok, here we go, week 28 Nellie 6", not the 12" that I've been doing. Rhonda, you also wanted to show an "as we go" pictures too. So here they are, and this is also why I couldn't do a tut on anything. I think in reverse....LOL

I started with the four corners (4 - 1 1/2" blocks)

Then I did the four center blocks.

Then I worked on the 4 -4 block side and top blocks

And the finished Wk 28 Nellie

Rhonda 12-28-2010 03:53 PM

That turned out fantastic Katie! I like your contrast really well. You can take this one and turn the blocks in so many differant ways to get differant looks. It was hard for me to decide which one I liked the best.

This is the size I use to make my hotpads. I make the 6 1/2" quilt block then add borders back it and turn it right side out and stitch in the ditch.

klgreene 12-28-2010 04:07 PM

I'm not exactly sure what I'm going to do with it yet. Don't know if I just want to put a sashing on it, or make it into a small doll quilt . I'm going to make some more blocks and see what happens. Oh, and again I had one section upside down again. I have no idea how I do it, but I fixed it. I may just start leaving them and just tell people I planned it that way. :)

Hi Rhonda,

This probably isn't the right place to say it, but I wanted to thank you for the templates. They came in the mail today. Now I have been wandering through your tutorials and projects, just deciding where to join in!

Again thanks for the templates.

hugs, Jupiter aka Marilyn S.
