Moonwork, I LOVE the green in your quilt! Great job!

Can't wait for the next one!!

labeelady 05-19-2013 06:59 AM

I brought my mystery scrappy with me (among several other tops) to my sister's house and told her to pick out one she likes and I'd quilt it for her. Out of all the tops I brought, she liked the scrappy one the best. So now I know where its new home will be when I've finished quilting it. She had fabric in her stash for a backing and I brought along some batting, so while I'm here we will get it sandwiched and ready for quilting.

paintmejudy 05-19-2013 02:49 PM

Wow, 3 great quilts posted since I was last on the site. You go, girls! Great jobs.

I finally hooked up a different printer so I can show you mine. When I finished it, I had no idea where it was going. Then I checked the measurements and sure enough, it is just Quilt of Valor size. I discovered you can donate locally as long as QOV guidelines are followed - yeah, no postage. I went to the VA clinic and the social worker has two young injured returning female soldiers in mind. I will let her choose. I just need to do a presentation case (pillowcase) and the label and it can be delivered. My FMQ is still on a learning curve, but the loops were fun and the orange peel pattern suits the big blocks. The colors look a little light here. The stars are very coral and the back is very purple.

irishrose! I love it. I love the colors. Your coral stars are pretty. I love LOVE your quilting. I hope you don't mind I may copy you. Besides my first one I made with the group, I've got five tops finished for my MotherInLaw's grandchildren and 14 cut now ready to sew. I decided Judy's scrappy mystery train pattern was perfect for these. And they all get the same design so nobody thinks I'm picking favorites. I do think I'll also add a small border all around to use more of grandmas fabric. Can you tell me how big your outside border was cut? I want to guess 2.5". Here are my last five: I'm using denim for some stars. That's what's in Grandma's stash. I think they'll be great for the boys!

irishrose 06-25-2013 07:08 PM

Wow, five and each one very pretty with more to go. Yes, I think the border was 2 1/2". That's all I could get from a scrap left from another quilt. It was wide enough to tie the colors together and not lose any points on the outside stars. I wanted to come back with the coral for binding, but I didn't have enough. I found the coral and purple print at my LQS - that was my only purchase for the whole quilt. I had admired that fabric for some time so it didn't break my heart to buy a small amount. The binding is wider than usual - I seem to like wider bindings and especially if the fabric is attractive.

FMQ - I went around each star 3/8" inside the stitching line. It worked quite well with my big plastic FM foot. I was surprised. Then I did a little star in the center of each star. The cream sections were just small loops. When I took one FM class, the instructor said to never cross a line, but I've discovered I like loops as well as meandering and they seem easier. Then orange peel in the squares with a continuous vine and leaves for the narrow border. It does lay perfectly flat - I just threw it on the floor for the pic and it looks like I could have straightened a few edges. I love it, but not for me - I am pleased it will go to a soldier.

SheriR 06-25-2013 09:02 PM

I think your quilt will be perfect for a QOV. It's beautiful. Thank you for your quilting details.

Evie 06-26-2013 06:21 AM

irishrose your quilt is beautiful. I love the purple backing. Good choice. SheriR, I was wondering if we would get to see your grandmother's legacy. I didn't realize you were going to use this great scrappy pattern. All very nicely done! How more to go?

Thank you Evie. And I'm currently sewing one of 14 I'm doing this scrappy star pattern. Then I have six for Grandmas sons I want to do a square in square pattern out of grandmas plaids. Then....you know all those tiny HST we can cut off these stars? (160) I'm making two quilts of those for grandmas daughter and one for ME. Total...25 left to finish....

DebbieJJ 06-26-2013 07:14 AM

SheriR, I LOVE how you've got the stripes all going the same way in the border and sashing strips. You've got some great quilts for your nephews. Your DMIL would be soooo proud.

Hey dear Judy, any more mystery train rides in the near future? I am crossing my fingers as are so many others...

meanmom 06-27-2013 04:02 AM

I love the quilts. Irish, I never thought of sending it to the quilts of Valor program. I have a couple of orphan quilts here that I was looking for a home for. Something eventually pops up. I coule take them down to the local Veterans hospital here. Good idea. My quilt guild is doing a mystery for our officers challenge this year. I chose fabric for a quilt of Valor for it . I an 2 months behind on it but will catch up quickly.

I finally got to finish this train ride. I still need to put the final border on but this is as far as it is now. My quilt inspector gives it a seal of approval. But, he wants me to give it to him :) The house is a little dark at the moment but the stars are a red with grey, black and white dots. Enjoy

I'm not sure if anyone follows this scrappy train thread any more but here are four more tops I've finished for my sweet MIL's grandchildren. I have 15 finished. Eight more to go??? BUT I had to make a side quilt for just her! Pic and story in next post.

So I spent 6 weeks this summer with my sweet MotherInLaw after my FatherInLaw passed. While I was with her I showed her all the tops I had finished and also finished the four above while I was at her house. Each time I finished one I showed her. When I laid out the purple/flowers she just sighed and said, "Oh I want to be buried with that one." I was shocked and of course said it was hers!! OR... I'd make her a special quilt I had planned from the cut off flying geese ears. I came home from Idaho the middle of August and quickly finished the geese parts on my last 8 quilts. Then made two more blocks so I'd have 25 for a 5x5 setting. I sashed her quilt in the fabrics of the one she wanted to be buried with. The tags on her quilt and the grandchildren quilts will now say "Grandma will forever have a piece of your quilt and you will always have a piece of hers." I will mail it to her Monday.

Caroline S 09-13-2013 02:36 PM

That is a wonderful story Sheri. Great quilts, all of them.:)

MaryMo 09-13-2013 02:38 PM

SheriR, what an endeavor! Your MIL and grandchildren will love them, I'm sure ... and you're using all your scraps!
You certainly have earned your angel wings with these.
