Or you could try a nice hot shower from a just boiled kettle - they don't like that! You'd have to do it a few times to get them all though! I got bit by a regular little black ant the other day and my foot swelled up like a balloon so look out!

My MIL said that taro works - so I laid out my Tarot cards - all they said was "you'll have to deal with a little nuisance." If that doesn't describe the problem.

I have had lots of friends who absolutely swear by the borax/powdered sugar mixture.
I have never had to mess with ants, since my grandson is an expert as messing with their nests (and, our tractor will turn a nest in a heartbeat.)
I would be interested in hearing from anyone who tried the borax/powdered sugar mixture and it DIDN"T work ...

I tried that last year. Didn't work for me but maybe you'll have better luck!

I'll agree with everyone that said Terro. Works great!
Just have to make sure that after you put the granuals down, you wet it a little bit.

But, like I suggested before....maybe go to local nursery and ask what to use if you don't want to use anything around your veggies.
Also, if you have a local Cooperative Extension, they could probably help you too!
You can also pick up classes for Master Gardener. The classes are VERY informative. I've gotten my Master Gardener certificates in RI (got my first one back in 81--renewed it a few times), CT, GA and Hawaii. Depending on where you are, some you pay for, others they want you to volunteer your time back to the community.

An environmentally friendly cure for fire ants has been announced by Walter Reeves on his "Georgia Gardener" radio program. Testimonials that it REALLY WORKS are coming in.

Simply pour two cups of CLUB SODA (carbonated water) directly in the center of a fire ant mound. The carbon dioxide in the water is heavier than air and displaces the oxygen which suffocates the queen and the other ants. The whole colony will be dead within about two days.

Besides eliminating the ants, club soda leaves no poisonous residue, does not contaminate the ground water, and does not indiscriminately kill other insects. It is not harmful to your pets, soaks into the ground. Each mound must be treated individually and a one liter bottle of club soda will kill 2 to 3 mounds.

Spread the word!

For those not familiar with Walter Reeves, he is from the University of Georgia agriculture department, specializing in home gardening. His television show, 'Gardening in Georgia', is on each Saturday.

Wow that is the best use I can think of for Cream of Wheat, LOL.

Indoor and Outdoor Ant Control Supplies:
1 1/2 cup Cream of Wheat
Instructions: Place a dish of Cream of Wheat where the ants can access it.
Note: After they eat it, the cereal expands and the ants will explode.

   Yikes!

Here is a site that tells you how to use borax.
