As silly as this sounds, you could try what they tell parents with kids who have this issue. Walk outside, close door. Wait 5 minutes. Walk back in. repeat several times a day. (evenings too). After a week, move it up to 10 minutes. Next week 15 minutes, etc. I had a screamer every time I left the house. This trick worked for her, so it should work with a dog, and you don't need a sitter for the dog! I used the time on the front porch, to read. For the dog, you could also walk all over the porch barefoot to put your 'smell'' where he can find it. Also, if you carry small treats when you leave, and give just one when you come back in, your leaving becomes a 'good' thing. This worked for my sister's Chow.

LuLu is not as bad as your dog. When i walk away from her, people tell me all the time that she just frets and keeps looking for me but she never moves. Because when I walk away from her I say "stay". So she waits for me but she is not happy. She looks around for me even if she is with DH. But I can go to work in the am and come home for lunch and she appears fine.

Another suggestion would be a GOOD obedience class. A basic obedience class should teach a good, solid stay. Even though you are still near, it teaches the dog he can be apart from you and still be safe. The dog must stay in the same place/postion you put him in, while you walk away, and eventually return. The distance will gradually increase, the length of time the dog is required to stay increases, and distractions will be added. The advanced obedience classes include out of sight stays, where the dog is required to remain sitting or in the down position for a specific length of time with the handler out of sight. You would never leave a dog on a stay when you leave the house for any reason other than training, but the training itself can give the dog confidence. Just another thought!
