OMG, Debbie, your story reminds me of when I had one of my older sons hold one of their baby brothers (newborn), there was no love there whatsoever, and within a few minutes after setting new baby on dear son's lap, older son said to me, "okay mom, can you take it now".

I was moms go-for until about age 8... she'd call out to me at changing time, quick, go get me a diaper... I need a pair of rubber pants... a baby washcloth... and of course part way through her changing a baby sibling she'd pass me the wet or dirty diaper to take to the bathroom to put in the diaper pail.

By age 8 though, I was making bottles and changing diapers all on my own, and remember taking my baby siblings out for a walk around the block in baby buggy/carriage to show off my new baby siblings to all the neighbourhood moms. So proud I was.

Yes, me, too!

Cotton diapers also served as a great makeshift bib when/if I didn't have any vinyl bibs on-hand!

I remember riding our bikes to the grocery store with a note from our mom stating what we could buy along with a signed check! I guess her hand written note was our “2 forms of ID”

I remember making regular store runs for mom to buy cigarettes for her, and there was never a question or concern from the store owners. No note or nothing.

Boy, have times ever changed.

And I'm sorry, I can't stand the "well we survived X, Y, and Z" memes. Yeah, you survived, a lot of kids didn't. When you know better you do better.
I remember riding in the boxes of pickup trucks!

That was par for the course back in the day. Trucks and station wagons.

And then there was the old wobbly baby changing tables!

I remember these from babysitting!

I used to park the diaper pins in the plastic changing pad when changing diapers!

I still have one of each of these, and they work! I use them when I put a hair conditioner on my hair that needs heat to be used with it. I don't do it too often though, because I'm too lazy to drag them out!

I remember when little, us little ones were in the front seat, no seat or seatbelt. When parent had to stop in a hurry her arm would come out and "save" us. Amazing how any of us survived.

I remember it so well, mom with baby siblings laying across her lap.

Sends shivers up and down my spine today whenever I reflect on it.

I often think about the unlucky ones that didn't make it beyond their childhood to reflect on days gone by.
