I have gone electric. cannot pull the gas starter anymore. So I pull around extention cords. I do have a gas one to to reach far beyond the house but have to have DH start it nd I do not stop till I run out of gas. then return to the house for fill up and another pull from DH.

I always research on Amazon before going to the store. The reviews often tell me what to look for and what to avoid, and sometimes give me the brand name, model number, and price. Helps me make more intelligence buying decisions.

Oh I have heard all of that before from DH untill I got him a Echo a little costly but it lasted and I never heard all that grumblying again.

who makes this one - is it Ryobi? I have been looking for a cordless one.

I had a B&D electric corded one that quit working literally weeks after the two year warranty expired. Here is a copy of the letter I sent to the company.


Dear Mr. Archibald,

Boy, do I feel lucky! My Black and Decker string trimmer model ST4500 lasted one whole month beyond its warranty period of two years! I was happily trimming away when it just quit. No smoke, no strange odors, no weird noises. Just stopped. I did manage to get a few extra revolutions out of it by banging the head on the ground (the trimmer, not mine) which leads me to believe there is a loose connection somewhere. I'm sure if I took it to a repair shop and paid, say, twice as much as it originally cost, I could get it fixed or be told it is not worth fixing.
Fortunately I had a spare - a B&D Groomer Edger 600 that I believe to be about 18-20 years old and it still works. It is heavier than the new one, which is a problem for me because I have bad wrists (carpal tunnel), but I did get the yard finished.
Now, one of these fine B&D products was made in the US and one was made in Mexico. Do I have to say which is which?
So, depending on what kind of a company you are running there, perhaps you will send me a new trimmer, or send me the $20 I paid for it, or just congratulate your wonderful workforce on producing a product that lasts just the right amount of time to maximize profits.

We have a DR wheeled trimmer. It starts with a key , very nice. But it is a monster. It has a blade that will cut down saplings. I do not use that thing. I have an old Craftsman That I use to trim around the flower beds.

I bought an Echo that I like. It uses 2 separate strands that you feed into each side of the head.

PS - I have some parts of the yard that are a little overgrown. May I borrow the goats for an afternoon?

DH bought a John Deere lawn tractor and a weed eater came with it as a promotional gift. It must be pretty good, he hasn't cursed the tractor or the weedeater. He feels about his lawn equipment like I do my quilting tools. They have to work and work perfect when we want to use them.

I have had the same problem so I went to the local Home Depot and got one that has 2 wheels and kind of goes to a point in the front. It goes anywhere and is easy to start and maneuver. Runs on regular gas. I know Sears has them and most hardware stores. It works Great for me!! The neighbors saw mine and went and got one for themselves. So easy to use.

Hmmm....I think I've had them all. I've worn out several Sears ones, a couple of Ryobi, a John Deere and currently I have a Troy-Bilt TB70SS.

First and foremost...Buy a Straight shaft!! I will NEVER own another bent one..kills the back.

The Troy that I currently have is the easiest to start than any that I've ever had. The string part is a bit confusing though because it uses the "split" string. Not bad though. It has good power and is fairly light weight. I can weed eat for several hours and I'm a 5 foot, 110 lb. woman. Overall, I'd give it a good rating.

The John Deere..I tore out the shaft twice...not good. Loved the great saw blade that I could switch out though. It was a bit temperamental when it came to starting, but I could usually get it running without DH's help. Didn't buy another one due to the insides of the shaft breaking so easily.

The Ryobi was a great started...but I wore it out in 1 year. Great power though and I liked the design where we could switch out the heads.

The Sears ones...I wouldn't walk across the street if they were giving them away for free.

Having said all that....the very BEST weed eater...even better than Billy's goats is.....Round Up. :D
