Do you forget how to spell a word?

Getting old is not what it is cracked up to be. I start writing something and can't remember how to spell it but I found a way to solve this. I minimize what I am typing on and go to Microsoft word and type the word then do spell check and then go back to the page I was working on. It works for me.

The only problem that I have is when I spell a perfectly good 'English" word (suitable for Australians) and the computer I am using has an "Americanised" dictionary and I end up with a page full of red, underlined words. My confidence is thus shattered and I spend the rest of the night checking in my Macquarie Dictionary that I have really spelt them correctly...lol!

You can use spellcheck. It's the last button in the row above when you use quick reply, if it is compatable with your system. Otherwise you are stuck with rephrasing, or doing the best you can. I keep a dictionary handy because I've always needed to check spelling.

Not really, but then I've been an editor and proofreader several times over the years, taught ESL when I lived overseas, worked as a reporter, etc. My ex was in the Navy and when I got his first letter I sent it back with all his spelling and grammer corrected - he should have know then, right? I can be a noodge but have learned to not return letters with corrections anymore. I'm sure it will catch up with me at some time, but so far I haven't had that problem. Lots of other problems, but spelling and grammar are still intact. For today, anyway.

I am suffering from this too -I was always an excellent speller - I could see the words spelled in my head - it was just easy - now - I find myself struggling with words - I am only 47 but since I don't work out of my home - I don't have to use it as much - I do read alot and always have - I think its one of those joys of getting older...

I, too, have many, many years of using words and have been an excellent speller. My problem is that I have a new keyboard which is so sensitive that if I even brush a key, it types it. I have no idea how many words I have misspelled in recent weeks. I am bothered, however, when someone misspells so many words in a message that I cannot figure out what the writer intended.

do you use Firefox as your browser. it is a free download if you don't. it has spell check built in. that way, you can spell the word as close as possible. then when the browser underlines it in red, right click on the word and it will give you suggestions. i use it all of the time
