Since I started taking melatonin (3mg) and wearing foam ear plugs I only have a few nights a month that I don't sleep all night, Use to be more times a month, that lasted the last 20 yrs or so.

This is exactly how I sleep, I think its because about 8 yrs ago, I began having panic attacks at night and I still have them every once and awhile.

Ditto for me too. However, my bladder wakes me when it's time to get up. LOL!

I have been an insomniac for quite some time.
It is just unable to consistantly sleep. But there are times of crashing to catch up on sleep.

I have found out that the tides of the moon effect my sleep. Whether I can see it or not, I know when there is a full moon because I'm unable to sleep more than 2 hours at a time.

Even as a young girl I have had sleep problems. It got worse as I grew older. When I go to bed I just toss and turn most nights for about an hour and then get up because the RLS and neuropathy in my feet won't let me stay in bed a minute longer. Surprising with all the meds I 'm on for heart, arthritis and emphysema to name a few ailments. What I don't like is that in the morning I have trouble waking up. DH is just the opposite, going to bed 9pm and waking anytime after 2 or 3am.

I never take naps unless I'm sick. I always have trouble going to sleep and staying asleep. I even take amitryptyline to help me sleep and some nights that doesn't even work. My chiropractor says you need minerals to sleep so maybe the answer is taking a multi vitamin with minerals. I never remember to take them.

After I had my third child, my sleep patterns changed, and without going into the whole story, the result was going on a weak dose of Elavil every night before sleep, and then I slept all night. without it, I cannot fall asleep. Has something to do with serotonin reuptake inhibitors. That child is not 23, and I suspect I will be on this med for life
Now, I take the pill, an hour later I go to bed, asleep in 10 minutes, wake up about 7 1/2 hours later

A critically ill family member and two ill children and other family problems led to lack of sleep whih resulted in depression-not suicidal. I spent seven weeks in psych unit and was treated with Desyrel(trazadone). My psychiatrist told me I would have to be on it the rest of my life. I took it for almost 30 years. When recently hospitalized for pneumonia the doctors stopped the Desyrel. I am no longer taking the Desyrel. I do have some problems going to sleep but no longer wake up feeling drugged in the morning--and I was taking a light dose. Desyrel (trazadone) is not a drug to be taken lightly. It is a powerful medication. It can cause serious side effects. Only take it under the care of a doctor. A patient in the psych ward with me was given her first dose of Desyrel and then given a half-day pass from the unit. Her "friends" did her a favor and gave her an alcoholic drink. An ambulance brought her back to the hospital in a comatose state. This drug must be taken seriously. It is a marvelous medication given under controlled conditions. Talk to your doctor before taking it.
