I have a good surge protector on mine, But when we have a storm in the area,I unplug, I have lost two computers and last time the direct tv reciever, I called the computer maker after the second time and asked what kind of surge protector to buy and he said there is no surger(at that time) that protected from lighting hits. So I unplug.

I leave them plugged in....I don't have computerized machines though. Just older ones that if I had to I could replace the motors on easily.

I am using three surge supressors, expensive ones, as extension cords now. They saved my modem three times from lighting strikes, but it renders the modem protection shot after a save, so they are still usable for the power part. Now after my move, I am on wireless, but still have to unplug my computerized sewing machine after use every time. Not tempting fate.

use surge protector at home. when the machine is not in use it is unplugged.
always took the surge protector along to qltng.lessons. one time the electricity was cut off because of street work & nothing happened to the electronic machine.
the precautionary step was well worth it.

Power bar (one designed for computers, etc) with an on/off switch. The main sewing machine, embroidery machine, serger, iron, Ott light are permanently plugged into this. When I use one of the FWs it gets plugged in there as well. We got hit by lightening about 16 years ago.......very expensive lesson to learn. Now we have a lightening rod system on the whole property and protection bars for everything other than lamps. The lightening hit the driveway and burned out the computer in hubby's work van!

Living in the lightening capitol of the world..........
