I learned to sew on a singer treadle. It wasn't decorated and I didn't care, it was fun learning to sew.

I think that if they want to sew, just get them started on something that works well and something that is not limited. When my niece comes over and wants to sew, she always cleans the machine first after asking the last time used. She's become a pro at cleaning at 8 years old. She gets the manual out to make sure everything is set up the way she wants. She is constantly supervised of course. She also gets on YouTube to check out the different tutorials.

Found a pale blue 15 clone and gave that to my DGS. Good machine, simple, reliable.

They have quite a few brother machines with blue in them, low end brothers are great starter machines the XL-2600i is a blue machine and a consumer best buy, you can find them for a little over a hundred. I have the XL-3500i that I just dug out the other day and it still sews very well. My 3500i is a light blue machine. I love blue

I bought my Grandson a garage sale machine with a cabinet for $20. He learned to make fleece quilts 3 X-mas' ago for everyone in the family. Anyway, he tricked out his machine with 'rub ons' of skate boards and his favorite skate board dudes that do the awesome tricks. His machine truly is 'his', now. He was 12 when he learned to sew, and still, 3 years later still sews and fixes clothing and sews patches on his bowling quilt, too.

If Mom would have bought me a pink machine I would have never used it until after I turned my little brother loose on it with some spray paint-markers or what ever to make it ""cool'' Pink is still a color I dislike. The only pink you will find in my house is the little bit of bright pink in my tye-dyed T-Shirts.

I love pink and purple. Wouldn't bother me if my sewing machines were that color.
Just buy him a white colored machine.

I taught my DGS to sew two summers ago on my Bernina. Last Black Friday, he bought himself a cheap machine. I had his grandmother's (DH's wonderful first wife) Elna from the '70's so I gave it to him over this past spring break. He made a lap quilt while we were there which I took it to my longarmer. When he came this summer for his vacation, we bound it and he wanted to piece a bigger quilt. That one now needs to go to the longarmer. He LOVES his Nana's machine! Maybe it would have mattered if it was a girly color but I don't think so. He LOVES to sew!

I'm with you, Nammie, my DGDs all have had to opportunity to sew on my Bernina. A good vintage or antique machine could do, also.

What is wrong with the plain white or cream color machines?? It would be very expenive for machine manufacturers to produce "male" themed machines. Too small of a marketing niche. What color woud it be? Blue is rarely used for boys In baby quilts! Get some decals.

Nice to hear that boys want to learn to sew!!
