Our food pantry prefers that we give money since they can get meat (frozen) and cerl much cheaper from the Northern Illinois food bank.
Any time I get coupons for a free item and I know I won't use it, I still get the product and the donate it to the food drives. I also get samples that I give to the food drives.

Don't forget a few treats, especially if the center helps kids. My mom always talks warmly of when thier baskets contained cookies or candy, Koop aid etc as a child. Those are novelties that kids don't get when money is tight.

I try to donate what would make a meal. Spaghetti/macaroni and meat sauce. Noodles and tuna. I know the items don't stay together, but I figure someone will find a complete meal. I also try to donate staples and items that are not often thought of. Salt, pepper, baking supplies, not mixes but the soda, baking powder and such. A few spices nothing fancy. And I do look for sales or bogos.

Did they give you ideas? If not call them and find out what they need.
Our food pantry tell us can goods, but not soups. They get some through the government and always has chicken noodle soup, and beans.
Sometimes they tell us to help supply paper goods. Different times of the year they seem to need different things.

I agree with things like canned veggies, stews, peanut butter, and canned meats. Dried staples like pasta are good, maybe boxes of minute rice. Watch for grocery sales, a lot of times there will be canned or dried staple products on sale.
