Doesn't bother me a whit, but then, we have fantastic looking firemen here in Spfld. One year, I turned around and went through the intersection twice. I had a kid on each side of the car and they all wanted to put a dollar in the boot, so that was a good enough excuse for me. Then I had to go through a third time to get where I was going in the first place... :)

THey have done that around here for years. If you feel guilty for not giving, stop by a firehouse and tell them you wish to donate to the fund. They will take anything. The firemen would appreciate a "food" donation too. Our local firehouse gets homemade pies, cookies, cakes, etc. all the time.

I think it is GREAT!!! Our volunteer firemen do this every year and if you can give, great if not, so be it, just don't be an idiot and speed by them!!! Roll down your window and say good job guys!!! My husband said that this year one vehicle almost caused an accident cause they sped up to avoid the "toll", totally uncalled for!!!!

For some causes it's needed. And I'm ok with that but to be expected is another.
Every October the firemen and trucks go into residential areas. If they haven't received your envelope by a certain date they knock on your door.
I checked my tax statements and I pay $600.00 a year to the fire department And this is only one house. Alot of people are on fixed incomes and can't afford their homes as it is.
I have had the knock on the door and it's still done in poor taste. And I don't answer it!

The Firemen around here collect money for MDA too. Never more than one at each corner. Last year I was trying to give him some money and he didn't know it, I had to stick the money way out of the window so he could see I wanted to give him money.

I never give money to anyone standing in the street. I have my favorite charities that I give to directly. I do love the Salvation Army bell ringers at Christmas time. I give to everyone I see and then thank them for standing in the cold. Some of them are homeless people earning a little bit of money working for the Salvation Army.
