Thanks Toverly for asking this question as I was just discussing this with my future DIL today. After my dear MIL died, each of her children were to get a trunk. I left my late husband's trunk sit in the garage for several months and it was open most of that time. I tried baking soda and a non scented dryer sheet. My future DIL suggested kitty litter but I think I will try some of the ideas here first.

I think I am going to try Prisms suggestion of the charcoal fabric, this trunk is huge. I could sit in it upright with the lid closed. It's about 5 feet x 3 feet x 4 feet high. So it will have to sit where it is. Thanks for all the great suggestions.

Many stores have silica to help absorb moisture. Along with Prism99 suggestion the silica would help eliminate the smell if any moisture producing mold/mildew would be present no matter how minute.
