"Cocks Comb" is the common name, latin name is celosia - there are many different varieties. They're not perennial here in zone 5 where I live (Chicago), but they're sold quite often as annuals.

    Very pretty and different.

It's great. I believe celosia is annual everywhere it grows, but it re-seeds.

there is a neighbor that moved in six months ago around the corner----there WAS a beautiful array of flowers in the yard--they have let them go completely!!! at the front steps--they are lined on either side with hostas..they are turning brown and so compacted---I want so badly to ask if I might separate and replant....what a shame.

And ho wlucky you are for having a sharing neighbor--I did the same when I had my own home...

I just love it... and like others... Cocks comb is what first came to mind, but it's so BIG!!! I"ve never seen them that tall.....
I answered an ad in our local newpaper this morning, FREE PLANTS , COME DIG. I picked up some ribbon grass, 3 varieties of hostas, ostrich ferns, Stella De Oro lilies, and a varigated sedum..... YEAH!!!! The lady has a bad back and can't care for the flower beds any more... So they had to go.... I have sucha small yard... but I couldn't resist... there were so many other things left..... but I had no room, or already had those varieties.

I thinned my beds last year via freecycle...
