in Mississippi we call it a cocks comb. if you hang them upside down then dry I have heard that they will retain their color

Yes, it is Cock'scomb and was often used in old-fashioned applique quilts. I have never been able to get one to grow, so you are lucky!

Cockscomb!!! My mother grew the biggest most gorgeous ones! They also dry beautifully, 2 or 3 stems tied together and hung upside down in an out of way place. Make beautiful arrangements.
