It's been my experience that the wife's family gets to see the kids most often. Rather frustrating and disappointing, I think.

Do you video chat? You could try making a video of you reading a book out loud. Maybe your son's childhood favorite. Gently inserting yourself via long distance methods into their nuclear family niche might encourage them to involve you more. Emphasis on gently since some DIL are downright prickly.

I have 4 granddaughters. 3 live on the other side of the world. We skype. I don't know what missionary parents did before computers. The problem we have is our day is their night. I get to talk to and see the baby because she isn't in school but the older 2 are in school when we are awake.
They are here in the US every 3 to 5 years and we make the most of that time. They call me the spoiling Grandma because I spoil them as much as I can whenever I have the chance.
We use the computer ALOT!! Skype, Facebook, Blogs and email.
