Anybody have any ideas for getting rid of or preventing kidney stones? My mom gets them all the time. Just thought I'd ask.

    Thanks!!!

Try powdered cranberry pills; you can get those at Wal-Mart or any herb store. I had a friend that used to get those all the time; this helped her a lot.

Just start at a low dose & see what level it will take to even out the system.

When my ex-husband had them, I started him on magnesium citrate (50 ml) and vitamin B6 (50 ml). He never had a reoccurrence.

If I don't take cranberry capsules every day I get kidney stones. I can miss the capsules for about 2 weeks and I'll get a stone. So far, in the past 13 years, as long as I take the capsules, I have not had any stones.

Drink only filtered, reverse osmosis water.

I had two, one on each side, five weeks apart, 25 years ago. We installed a very expensive Rainsoft Water Treatment system, whole house, and I have never drunk tap water since. Now that I'm in a rental, I buy only Aquafina or Dasani bottled water. Not one stone since.

The well water here is high calcium and the farm's owner has had kidney stones for years; can't convince her to switch to "pure" uncalcified water.

Depends on the type of kidney stones. I get calcium-oxilate stones. So no pills help. Cranberry actually makes it worse for my kind. If you have my kind..... NO COFFEE, NO DARK BEVERAGES, NO CHOCOLATE, NO CARAMEL. Basically nothing brown kind of. And limited Dairy and lots and lots of other stuff. with all of that drink AND OODLES AND OODLES OF WATER. I drink a glass of water before I eat and a half of glass after I eat. I have stuck to this diet and had no problems for many many years. Best of luck :-)

My stones are also calcium oxalate and cranberry pills DO help IMMENSELY. When I take the pills, I never have stones. If I run out of the pills for 2-3 weeks I get stones.

Cranberry makes the urinary tract "slippery" making it difficult for things to adhere to it. Thus, the stone material doesn't get a chance to cling to the wall and grow.

I make sure that I NEVER run out of cranberry pills now!
