My DH will ask me first if I can or will do something for someone at work. It usually is just a snap on a shirt or a patch on something, so I don't mind doing that. Most things take about 10 minutes. They think I great and it earns a few points for him. LOL If I don't want to do it, it's NO.

Years ago a neighbor woman showed up at my door at 6:30 am just after my husband left for work. In her hand she had a pair of her husbands slacks. The seam was split in the back and she said it was the only pair clean for him to wear to work and would I fix them. In spite of feeling annoyed, I pulled out my sewing machine and sewed up the split. As I was finishing she all of the sudden whipped off her blouse and said "oh while you are at it, would you fix the seam in my blouse?" YIKES.........

The second someone makes the comment "Oh, you sew." I immediately say - yes, I don't do alterations and there is a 3 year waiting list ahead of you anyway. I learned the "3 year waiting list" from my mom, who really does have a 3 year waiting list at times.

I tell them I do not do alterations. The truth is I would rather make something new from beginning to end than alter.

About hurting someone's feelings. Did they consider your feelings when they asked?

Tell them that you have to charge for the time and the money it costs for the cotton etc. Then make sure you give them an expensive quote which they will not want to pay.

I tell people they are welcome to use my machine to do it themselves. Only one friend took me up on my offer.

ROFL I'd say "sure, if you could come fix my toilet for me, I seem to have a clog" Maybe is they realize they aren't a plumber they will realize you aren't a seamstress! That or ask them if they'd like them quilted!
