For all of you who have had pain for a while, who have been told nothing else can be done, or who have not had the pain fixed let me suggest that you get a second opinion from the orthopedic clinic in your state that treats your professional football team. They will have the best doctors, the most up to date training, the latest equipment that money can buy and they charge the same as the other doctors - what the insurance companies tell them they can charge. They are accustomed to patients who have to have the problem solved quickly so they can go back to playing football. They will give you the same fast treatment. In Dallas the Carrell Clinic will arrange a MRI the same day as your appointment, if you need one, because they don't wait to begin. They get the tests so they can give you a diagnosis. Then you have the choice of treatment. Take advantage of what those football teams have available - all you need is an appointment. We just called on the phone and made ours - they take medicare. I think all football teams have the same quality of care.

I see lumber injections in your future. Hopefully they will work for you if that is what the doc recommends. I have had bulging discs for over 10 years. Last procedure I had was a risotomy (sp?) which deadens the nerves that transmit the pain. The nerves eventually regenerate so this is not a permanent solution. I do feel 90% better!

The pain management doctor also said that if I lost some weight :-( that would also help.

I suffered with a bulging disc L3/L4 for over seven years. I had surgery one year ago - microdiscectomy (sp?)- and it was the best thing I could have ever done. I will tell you this, DON'T RUSH INTO SURGERY. The advice to make sure you are being treated by the BEST available doctors is the best advice you can receive. Epidural injections do work and at times I gained relief for over 18 months between injections, so I highly recommend Pain Management. I know what you are going through and I wish you the best. You are welcomed to PM me if you just need to talk. Like an earlier post, no one understands the pain unless they have experienced it.

My back problems started about 8 years ago and didn't know what caused it. My Dr. at the time would not do anything for quit a while. Then I compained so much, he finally sent me to have an MRI. Discovered that I had a compression fracture in the spine in the middle of my back plus my disc in the lower back down by the tailbone did not have any disc left at all - so was rubbing bone on bone. Finally went to a spine specialist who sent me to therapy and put me on Celebrex. Now I am relative pain free. Only hurts when I stand to long or sit to long. Exercises do help but the pain will never completely go away.

i hope you can get help with it. i've had leg pain for over 10 years due to my back. neck too. funny, no one wants to do surgery on me. i always thought surgeons jumped on the chance to make money. and this was before i went on MEdicare. now they just back away as if i had the plague. good luck.

Sometimes it takes a while and sometimes it is fixable and sometimes it's not. But always a relief to find out what it is!

Hope your back is better soon. Been there, done that. I never had surgery, but it has gotten a little better over 13 years.

Bless your heart, (and your back) . I can relate to back pain, and it is really not nice! Especially when you are told it is age related and nothing can be done about it. I pray yours is 'fixable' and can be healed quickly and painlessly.

Had a discectomy on L5 so I know the pain you mention. Mine got so bad in the end, I was a basket case. Now I'm all better.

Glad to hear that they found the problem. Finding the reason that you hurt, seems to be the hardest things for the docs to do anymore. Now, I hope that you get the right cure the first time.

sometimes knowing the problem is a beginning of relief. Up until they find the problem many DR's still look at femalesand think our problems are in our heads.
I've had difficulty getting my Dr to take some things seriously and I'm an RN!!! But insurance keeps me from going elsewhere. :(

I'm glad you were finally diagnosed and hope you get some relief from your pain. Back pain sucks! I have degenerative disc disease and some stenosis and a cyst on my spine. Have only been in pain for about 8 months but I feel like I've turned into an old woman in those 8 months. Got some relief with epidural injections and physical therapy but not enough and will be seeing a neurosurgeon in October. I know what I want for the rest of my active life and it isn't being in pain or limited by pain or drugged because of pain. When I told my pain doctor that she said "Good for you--great attitude" and referred me to the surgeon. Now, just hope he has a treatment to fix it. I will be thinking of you and hope the best for you (and everyone else on the QB dealing with back pain).

Let's hope good old physical therapy and muscle strengthening will do the trick.

Surgery = absolutely the last option...and if it is suggested, get not 1, not 2 but 3 "second" opinions.
If it's just buldging exercise and time is the best treatment - or so I have been told by a number of specialist treating my DH.

Good luck to you and I know what you mean about finally having a diagnosis to put with the discomfort. Pain, being subjective can be so very frustrating to get people to believe what you're going through.

Thank you everyone for all the well wishes! I see a specialist tomorrow so I'm hoping I'll be on the road to recovery. I would really like to get some time in on the long arm but it's almost impossible when you can't stand up for more than 5 minutes. BOO!

Mine was C-4/C-5/C-6... problem solved with Physical Therapy and some (not much) steroids... I still have to take it easy (no heavy loads, good posture, etc.) but no surgery!! Hang in there, it gets better!!
