Lindsey:
Popcorn salt is super fine, which allows it to completely dissolve in the water. I use hot tap water, put the salt in, stir & let it set to cool to room temp.

A easy/fast way to smooth the top is dip your spatula in hot water and tap it off and then spread it.

That is really nice looking. I was thinking of taking one. For my GS's 2nd Birthday, his dad had a lady make one....$80.00 and let me tell you.....You could have gotten at least $300 for yours. It was the worst decorated cake I ever saw.

I work in a bakery and love doing cakes. The dipping an angled spatual or butter knife in hot water and smoothing the frosting works great! Keep it up. Doing cakes can be very fun and rewarding!!
