Rachel the Buff Rooster is gorgeous! I can see where he and I could be buddies until he copped an attitude. Then he would have a formal introduction to my SW .40! :P

Too bad you cant freeze eggs, because 54 a week is one hell of an omelet! I bet the kids are like "Not eggs again......" kinda like a guy that grows a lot of corn. Its like how many ways can we fix all of this corn. Cornbread, Corn Whiskey, Corn Chowder, Corn Whiskey, Fried Corn, Corn Whiskey, Corn on the cob...........

Okay since we are going back to the good old days I need to go plant some corn now and pull out the still.

Just so happens I know someones hubby and I could have a ball getting you your Elk, Deer and what ever large mammals you want to eat. ;) It would give us an excuse to pull out our toys and go play with them for a while!

Oh yes, we'll definitely eat them. We process them when they're 12 weeks old, so they make good fryers and are even better on the grill. My daughters say they won't eat them because they're cute - I tell them they're not cute any more; they're in the freezer!

You can freeze eggs - mix them like you would for scrambling, put into ice cube trays and stick in the freezer. Once frozen, put them into Ziploc bags. I've read that 2 "ice cubes" equal approximately 1 egg. Of course, since we're getting 18 per day (126 per week), we don't need to freeze any!

I didn't know that! But since we only get 2 a day and we're a family of 4 our eggs don't stick around.

That buff hen is very pretty. I can't have any roosters(not that I want one) here in a subdivision. But, in the future I'd love an Americauna just for the blue eggs as a novelty. Though, I hear they don't lay near as well as R.R. There are so many cool breeds.

Hey - Meat comes from somewhere. It might as well be from your backyard. I am a city girl, but my husband had an uncle who was a farmer. One time we went to visit him and I met a steer. The next time we went over, we had a steak dinner and Uncle Myles said - I hope you enjoyed your meal, that was Fred!" A lesson learned. He was delicious!

Boy, that takes me back to when my Gram raised chickens for food. In the fall, just like what you did, we kids and Gram would head out to the henhouse and Gram would cull the hens. After the beheading, she would tells us kids, who can pluck feathers the fastest. Then the race was on and we would be covered in feathers. My brothers generally won. The chicken and dumplings Gram would make, so yummy.

hubby and I had a discussion of chickens yesterday. I really want some. we have the room- 34 acres. I found a place that has coops. And this has been so informational. I really want chickens.

Right now I buy eggs from a couple at church. we get our milk from a nearby dairy, so a cow is just not on the radar right now.

guess I have a new topic for dinner conversation tonight. After I put away the 5 qts., 4 pints and 2 half pints of peppers and onions and 2 qts. of apple pie filling we canned yesterday.

I might have some tomatoes ready to can tonight. need to check.

But chickens- yes, I need to talk to spouse about this.
