Have worn the masks in the store. Have asked others that I've made them for if they can breathe - they said yes.
Have not worn one for eight hours continuously.
Oldest wears his 10 hours per day in warehouse environment.

I cut the elastic for most of the masks at 7 inches - approximately 3/8" on each end gets buried in a seam.
Oldest likes 7.5 inches better - stays on his ears better. He has an "average" size head.

I made up quite a few - no idea how many, just as people asked for them I made more. No idea the name of it, but it was the style my niece preferred - and since she is an emergency room RN it was the pattern I used. Now that it looks like we will be needing them for a lot longer I broke down and ordered the Accuquilt die. In the beginning my daughter cut them out for me - so all I had to do was sew and iron. i am hoping the die will make it a bit easier for me. I had ordered elastic on eBay - ended up with almost 400 yards so shared it with a lot of other mask makers. My family likes the 1/8th inch elastic and it goes around the head instead of just the ears, so much easier and you can pull it down easier when not needed, and not leave it somewhere. It takes about 28 inches of elastic - but so much more comfortable. Then when other see them, they ask for some - and I can't say no. But taking the month of July off and will make more in August.

I believe masks need to be two layers of cotton fabric in order for it be effective. One layer will not work for protection.
Were the ones you got at Walmart fabric? I'm assuming so as you were able to wash them. The medical masks(like those worn at a doctors office) are non-woven material I think and not washable.

You can also make the elastic 10" and tie a knot in it, for adjustable length.

Thank you for the 3D mask link. I made one yesterday for hubbie to try out the pattern and it turned out really nice. I'm going to make some more for us and insert a garden wire nose piece. I will making another batch for a neighbor who is fighting cancer right now. He and his wife are in/out of medical offices/hospital so much that they likely don't have time to wash/dry them in time for their next round of appointments. I'll make him some 3D masks.

I finished 6 masks today with soft elastic and adjusters. The adjusters were very easy to thread onto the elastic.

I've made about 150--8 dozen of them for medical purposes so they were 4 layers, pleated style and since elastic in short supply then, I cut up a lot of t-shirts for the ties (I ran out of bias tape about the 4th mask!). I tried using what elastic I had for ear pieces on my trial ones for hubby and self--very hard to wear--guess our ears not located in right place! So most of the ones I make are pleated with t-shirt ties. I paid a teen friend who was saving for a car to make some of the Olsen ones for grandboys---the 12 & 5 yr old loved them cause it made them look like ninjas--the 6yr finds it too confining and the parachute cord bothers him. He's got a bit of a tactile issue. I made 2 layer ones for our family 4th get together--all wore and they weren't too hot.
A friend has made the 3D ones and really likes them so I have my pattern figured out and ready to make--I'm thinking maybe of using elastic (1/8") around the head and another friend makes the elastic adjustable using a pony bead--so I plan to do some experimenting.
If you are making for young kids, I have a panel on backorder from Keepsake that has animal notes, teeth, mustach etc to make the fun--my grandsons thought they'd be great.
