more of my yard crtitters

I have cats and a dog door so no bird feeders for me, sad . I love watching the birds in others' yards. Since I can't keep my cats in i try to keep the birds out. One cat is a great bunny catcher, and honestly, after the damage they do in my garden, i turn a blind eye. Our cockers are good at catching them, too. We also have possum, raccoons , squirrels , etc, and the occasional fox. It's odd since we live in a fairly congested area. Soon, I'm sure, we will have taken away all of their habitat. I truly hate that trend!

I rented a house once in the country not far from main road and loved it. Even the occasional skunk family. It was so peaceful. I would come home and after kids went to bed I would turn off the lights and watch the animals, including deer in the winter walk across the paths we walked previously. In the morning the boys would put their boots on and check out the different animal tracks. Was hard getting them to finish breakfast and on the bus. They were both in scouts and would try to identify the tracks. The oldest is now a hunter and stocks up on game for his freezer. He grows his vegetables and loves it. Hates city life. He says bad enough he has to work in it.

Very cool! We have a Great Blue Heron that hangs around the pond in the golf course behind our house. We also have quail, rabbits, coyote, hummingbirds, mourning doves, grackles, nuthatches, and loons. Occasionally, we get an egret or two. We actually see more birds since we moved here than when we lived in the SF Bay Area.
Unfortunately, we also have too many pigeons (people are feeding them) that hang around and drive away the other birds.

We used to have a bassett hound and that was a problem because we had so many rabbits and bunnies. She thought she was supposed to catch and bring them all to us. However, our community has became overrun with ferral cats and not only do we rarely see a rabbit, we have few birds. We had been rural, but then there was a building boom and two communities of new homes were put in on either side of us. The first one went in during the original boom and as people were realizing they could not afford what they had, they abandoned the homes and the pets. We used to have wild turkeys, sandhill cranes and many wading birds.
