Many older quilts seemed heavier because they added new coverings to older quilts. Or used blankets as batting. I do remember when visiting during an ice storm, no power, after the quilts were added, I could not turn over as a child.

Right now I've got a sheet, then an electric blanket, then a down comforter, then a king size quilt and then another that only covers the top of the bed.

This keeps DH comfy, and when I get too hot I just toss off what ever it takes to get where I want to be.

I've never double batt. I struggle enough with one layer under the needle.
I usually use one quilt or two when it gets really cold.
