to be kind to the animal, I would take her to the vet to check her out and get her sedated so that she can be shaved down and the mats eliminated. The matter hair is terrible and pinches at their skin. the cat would probably feel much better without the matted coat. I hope you are able to give her a loving, forever home.

Johnson's & Johnson's Detangler. Its a kids' hair conditioner. I use it on my dog. But don't spray, put it on your fingers and work it into the tangles. Use a wide tooth comb. Its a slow process.

Around here, unless your pet is totally caught up on it's shots, they won't touch it to groom it.

We had a cat that needed to be shaved every year. We would give him a "lion cut" or just spot shave him to get the bad mats out.

Take the kitty to a cat-friendly groomer to have shaved down to eliminate the matted fur.

did answer this one earlier but going to add to it
if you go to your Vet ask how much to have the cat sedated, shaved, shots and fixed might be cheaper to have it done all at once

My vet told me that he puts stitches in cats pretty often where people have taken scissors to the mats and the cat objected....I agree with the folks who said to get him shaved under sedation at the vet and start over so he can groom himself. And if she needs spaying (hint, hint, hint) they can do it while she's there and only knock her out once.

She's already been fixed and I will get her tested for feline leukemia, shots, etc.....I had a cat, Patches, for 19 yrs, she died 2 yrs ago of old age and I swore I would never have another cat but this little girl has adopted me, :) Patches was a short hair so we never had a grooming problem. Thx again for all the advice--

We found Fluffy in our woodpile. He was declawed but not neutered!!! It took over a year of coaxing and feeding from a far to tame him. One day he just came on the porch and jumped in my sisters lap. And she a dog person! Now he is the best cat. He is neutered and lives on our porch. He loves to be groomed. Makes me think he was a show cat and/or stud!!! He is a Himalayan.

I have wondered what to do about the matted hair. Now to find a groomer! Great to know there are so many cat lovers.
