I've been on Prilosec for 20 years; now OTC thank goodness. I've taken Nexium too when I have a coupon to buy cheap.
No side effects.
I have Barrett's Syndrome and GERT; would be in serious trouble without these meds.
I got into trouble by not treating my heartburn with a strong med in the first place.
I have a upper procedure done by my Gastroentorologist (terrible spelling)every three years, never a pollup.

Severe heartburn will cause esophagus cancer which there is no cure. I found that by taking one Prevacid once a week it will prevent my heartburn. My Dr. said he prescribes it for daily use but most don't need it daily to get relief. Try taking it every other day then every two days, and so forth until you find the number of days you can go without it. The prescription strength pills for 30 days will last me 30 weeks. If you have other health issues that you need to be on this pill don't skip days.

There is nothing that says taking Nexium will cause polyps. Who told you this??

I always seemed to be taking pills for heartburn & stomach issuses. I though this can't be good so earlier this summer I just quit. Instead I started eating a good probotic (sp) yogart. Which ever one is on sale, it sure has worked for me.

There is some talk about all of these types of heartburn medications and various side effects... however I would think that discussing this with your doctor is your best bet
The pros and cons of these meds can then be weighed against the risks of not taking them, on an individual by individual basis.

Maybe the polyps caused the problem that the doctor prescribed Nexium for???

It seemed like I ALWAYS had heartburn UNTIL I went on a diet to lose weight. Not ONE DROP of stomach acid - of course, also no diary or sugar or fats. It is amazing how our diet affects our well-being.
