Check with your bank I have (RBC) what is referred to as a Virtual Visa/Debit card it is only for use with dealing with US companies online. It's marked Visa/Debit on the corner of the card it takes the money from the account that you have associated with it. It carries the same protection that you have with a Visa card, and there are no fee's associated with it either so you won't get dinged on your month debit allotment. You can even use it at some Canadian online merchants you just need to check if they take that card as payment.

with a debit card, if they get your money it's really gone.
by the time the bank puts it back - if they ever do - you are drowning in all sorts of disaster.
I suspect your problem with the reversal of charges had more to do with the BANK and less to do with the type of card. I belong to a Credit Union, have found fraudulent charges twice, once with my husband's debit card, once with mine. Both times all it took was a 5-minute phone call to the credit union and all charges were reversed in less than 24 hours.
