We've never had a problem with other "creatures", and we live in the country.

I would close off the doors at night. there should be a sturdy board or something to slide in tracks . But Fido or Kitty would have to have their potty time done by then. Pets outside at night are fair game to other animals. does make life difficult at times, but one must do what one must.

We bought a dog door that locks and unlocks, using the microchip already in our dog. It's designed to only unlock when he is going in or out. Of course, we have only had it installed for a week and he is still learning to go in and out of it, so the lock mechanism is turned off and the door is taped open during the day so he can get used to it. Then, we will re-engage the locking mechanism.

Learned something new - did not know about the locking mechanisms available.

I have a friend who has a pet door. She hasn't had unwelcome guests that I know of. Her dog had an encounter with a skunk one day while they were out. He rolled on the carpets and several quilts all thru the house before they got home. Luckily her mothers house on their property was still sitting empty. They had to move in for several weeks while their house was professionally cleaned.

My brother was sitting at the table eating when he felt something go over his foot!
He looked down and screamed like a girl as the snake went under the refrigerator and then under the dish washer.
He couldn't/wouldn't touch it so had to have someone come and remove the dishwasher to get it out.

They also had a neighbors cat come in and eat some dog food a few times a week.
That didn't bother them but when the snake came the door got nailed shut!

Our neighbor has one but continually has opossums and raccoons use it. Gives me the shivers. Have also heard of burglars using them too. Another neighbor has a standard poodle, their doggy door was huge, a person could have gotten in. However, they had a skunk get in. They have a brand new side door. LOL They personally let the dog in and out now.

I have often thought I would install one of those covered tall fence dog enclosures next to the house so the dog would be safe and wild animals would not have house access.
