Default pillows vs. pillow forms

I wanted to make some 20" square pillows for my sofa. Pillow forms are between 20 and 40 dollars at that size. I was in Walmart and got 2 bed pillows, 20" x 26", for less than $3. each. Stuffed with the same fiberfill as a pillow form. And they are squishy enough that I think I can get them into a 20" x 20" pillow.

Having a similar debate with myself now. We go through pillows quite frequently as the dog(s) are allowed on the sofa. Sometimes they just get grimy and can be laundered but then there are the times when you get the tears or big scratches.

So I've been debating about getting the forms and just making covers as needed vs getting new pillows all the time. But like you, look at the cost of the forms vs what I can get cheapie ones from Walmart; Target; Kohl's and then just end up buying new ones for expediency.

I go to a lot of garage sells and thrift shops looking for my pillows cause the prices are outrageous otherwise. When I made my cushions for the porch furniture I used an old waffle looking sponge my sister had on her bed, cut it up to size/shape and then covered with muslin. Then I made my pillow cover to fit.

The difference is usually a pillow form insert is much thicker than a normal bed pillow.

If it were me ...I'd buy the bed pillow, open it up, take the stuffing out, reduce the size of the cover to fit the size of the new pillow cover. Normally you'd use a pillow form 1-2 inches larger than your outside cover. The larger the form the fuller your pillow will be & you'll have less wrinkling of the cover. Then shove the stuffing back in the original bed pillow cover & sew it shut. This way you have a much denser pillow "form" that will hold up to full body pressure.

Watch for JoAnn's sales. Two years in a row I've gotten their best 20" x 20" pillow forms with a 50% coupon and, both years, got FOUR of them at one time for $19.99 making them just $5.00 a form.

Saw 16" pillow forms for less than $4 at local Walmart today.
