Oh, I so miss pork and kraut and mashed potatoes on New Years Day! I grew up in NE Ohio and Grandma grew up in western Pennsylvania, bringing this tradition to our family. Mom did pork and kraut every year. I've lived in Illinois for years now, and not only do people here think kraut is weird, my DH and kids hate it and raise a stink if I fix it, due to the "fragrance." I thought of it several times today and wished I had Mom alive again to share it with her!

One year, long ago, my then new MIL, insisted that we have pork and cooked cabbage as it was to "insure" good luck. From the moment we started cooking that dish throughout the whole year we had nothing but BAD luck. Forget that superstition! I eat whatever sounds good! This year we had ham and beans...hubby has been laid off and the thought is that we are grateful to have food on the table! I have been fighting breast cancer and am so grateful to be blessed with a new year. I have been looking forward to 2010 since Jan. 2009! It is here and I am making the best of it!!

I will look forward to hearing your thoughts on the New Year's foods list!

Well we had our pork and sauerkraut and mashed potatoes on New Year's Day. I really hope calories don't count on holidays. I think I ate all day. Cheese, crackers, pepperoni, etc. during PennState game, dinner, plus picked all day while cooking.
I figure since we had a "Blue Moon" the calories don't count. (So why are my pants so tight around the waist??)
Hope everyone enjoyed whatever they were blessed enough to have on their table.
Diet starts Monday (Steeler game tomorrow to snack through LOL)

I'm in central PA - pork and sauerkraut and mashed potatoes.

Wouldn't it be great if those of us in PA who live so close to each other could get together sometime?

Yes, it would be really neat! Have lunch, hit some LQS's. Maybe we can make it happen this year sometime.

Good old German traditions...MIL always said...Pork, saurkraut and herring. (something about health, wealth and happiness) and always go into the New Year with a clean house.

From PA too and pork and sauerkraut is considered "lucky" to start the NY with.
