Does anyone want to "Weigh In"? This would be a quick report of our progress made. I'm sure it would encourage others and even keep us motivated!! I'm talking about lbs lost, or staying with an exercise routine, taking our vitamins ect... anything we are doing to get healthy.

Just recently someone asked "Can we diet and quilt at the same time"?

Well? I'll start: Lost 2lbs, keeping food journal, and Exercising!

dakotamaid 01-22-2010 07:44 AM

I brought the ex cycle upstairs and it is sitting in front of the TV in the living room. I can watch my favorite HGTV shows and pedal away. Since my knees are bad I've started with 15 minutes 2X a day at mim. resistance. (I'll work up time and resistance) I haven't lost any pounds yet but I'm scaling down my soda and sugar and adding more complex carbs.

Mamagus 01-22-2010 07:45 AM

Since I started in January I have lost 6 pounds... the last two pounds have been gained and lost about twenty times! I am walking on the treadmill and using my Ablounger. Trying to eat healthy, but that's a struggle ( and freaking expensive!)

Mamagus 01-22-2010 07:45 AM

PS... I hate journalling. HATES it. But I know I should.

beckyw 01-22-2010 07:48 AM

I think a weigh in is a good thing. Also just for eating healthy. I will do it.

Charlee 01-22-2010 07:51 AM

Ah Mamagus! We actually SAVE on the grocery bill compared to what it was! Our diet was loaded with junk food...much more expensive than vegies! The meat is cheaper, only because we eat less of it.

I'm back on the bandwagon to lose this last bit of weight! I hadn't been doing much to exersise lately, so yesterday I popped Leslie into the DVD player and she and I went for a walk! (I still think she's trying to kill me!)

Will let you know how it goes! :)

Oh! And everyone knows to weigh yourselves sans clothing and at the same time everyday? Clothing can weigh a ton... I shoot for first thing in the morning, after a potty break and before the shower!

Mrs. Mel 01-22-2010 12:47 PM

Oo, oo (hand raised); count me in. I am counting my Weight Watcher points and journalling. I have lost 2 lbs so far, and weigh in on Sunday. I am doing the Leslie Sansone walking videos. Accountability is a wonderful thing.

sew cornie 01-22-2010 01:18 PM

Alright, I'm in. I'm using a Fluidity Bar and also walk with Leslie. My goal is to use each method 2-3 times per week. (I just started on Tues.). I'm really good at whole grains, fruits and vegies, skim milk, lean meats, but also have quite a sweet tooth. Too much sugar is my biggest food problem and what I'm really trying to conquer. How frequently are we reporting in?

Thanks for starting this link. I think it will help to be accountable to someone else.

Lneal 01-22-2010 01:22 PM

I think we should report in anytime we feel we have accomplished a goal towards becoming healthy! But lets open it up to what everyone else's opinion is. Maybe that's too often, I really don't know, but it's encouraging to hear from everyone. So what do you think?

littlehud 01-22-2010 06:20 PM

I'll try it too. It's hard when you work food service and all that wonderful food smells sooooo good.

bluebird 01-22-2010 07:05 PM

Oh thanks! Am sitting here eating a Snickers bar  Need to get serious about this, will try it with ya all.

janRN 01-22-2010 07:10 PM

If I make any progress I'll report in but right now I'm stuck!! I guess I've hit a plateau but I'll keep trying. I wish I liked whole grains-white bread, pasta, and rice are my biggest problems (no my butt is my biggest problem LOL).
Thanks for the encouragement and good luck everyone!!

Charlee 01-22-2010 09:41 PM

Jan, how long have you been on your plateau? Some questions for you...how many calories are you consuming a day? Try...and you're going to think I'm totally off my rocker...try upping your calories for 3 to 7 days, to maintenance level. Then go back to your weight loss level and see if that works for you.
The other option is to kick up the activity a notch or two...

And bluebird? An occasional candy bar is perfectly fine! In fact, it's necessary for good mental health! ;) For real!! If you deny yourself totally, something you **really** want, then sooner or later you're going to give in and eat six of them! Better to tell yourself you can have, say, one a week...and then enjoy it completely without guilt! ;)

lacikat 01-23-2010 08:06 AM

I'm in! Am addicted to the Biggest Loser, last week was real inspirational with the Dr. listing all the health problems obesity
causes, as if I didn't know because I already have most of them. I guess I am in denial as to how serious they are. I need to have some handsewing to do while I watch the program instead of an off limit snack. That's my goal for this week. Good luck everyone.

quiltincharlotte 01-23-2010 08:26 AM

Sounds good to me, too! When do we "weigh in"!?! Count me IN! Char

Come to the board and "weigh in" every time you want to tell a goal you've reached. Could be lbs lost, a new healthy habit, exercising ect.. What ever you want to report to us. We will all want to hear about it and be more inspired by each others progress. Hang in there everyone, it will be worth it!!

PS: And if your needing some encouragement, "weigh in" for some help, we are here for each other.

jwwskis 01-23-2010 09:18 AM

I hate it too and when I went back to Weight Watchers in Sept. I was going to do the other method, but I found that I was cheating on myself. so I have been journalling and have lost 28 lbs.

joeyoz 01-23-2010 09:20 AM

I hav lost 8 lbs, keeping food log and semi-exercising.

Chasing Hawk 01-23-2010 09:24 AM

I lost almost 60 pounds last year. Put a few back on over the holidays. I went from a size 26 to a size 18 in jeans. We went on a low fat diet (keeping the fat content under 28 grams a day). You can actually eat very well lots of fresh veggies and fruit, chicken, fish and really lean pork. I cook with a non stick spray (Pam), an very little olive oil when making stir fry. For our sweet tooth I make a really low fat crumb cake made with applesauce and skim milk. For snacks we eat fruit and munch on popcorn.

And an added plus to this all ...all my old "fat" jeans are going to be a denim quilt someday.

jwwskis 01-23-2010 09:31 AM

I tried on all my jeans yesterday and was able to put 20 pairs in the TOO BIG bag. Maybe I should do a jeans quilt. Anyone have a good pattern?

That's awesome!! If you put in denim quilts in the search bar, there are a lot of listings on this board. Hope that helps, maybe some one else has better ideaa.

Pam G 01-23-2010 09:57 AM

I'm in, but doing it a little different. In may 2008 I was a tight 22 (289#), denying a size 24. Ended up going through a divorce and lost 45#. After having my Hysterectomy in December again have NO appetite so am trying to use that to my advantage. I think I'm down another 10# and in a size 18 (loose). I am shooting for less pop (my "habit") and more movement. I too have several Leslie Sansome videos, but have very energy/motivation to DO them. Would like to get to 200# or a size 14. Also need to start cooking again, have not been in the mood.

LOVE this website for ALL the encouragement in everything!!

Karyn 01-23-2010 10:23 AM

Count me in also. Since the first of the year I have been buying only fruits and veggies, chicken and fish. No more junk food. Fruits seem expensive but when you consider that we give over $3 for a bag of chips- no comparison. Also the things I learned in Weight Watchers-"If you bite it, write it" is so true. Also remember to count those BLT's - Bites, Licks and Tastes, they add up

Charlee 01-23-2010 10:45 AM

You're so right on that one Karyn! Altho I USE those BLT's...instead of ordering a calorie spendy burger (That Black Angus Mushroom Swiss from Micky D's is over 900 calories alone!) Hubby orders one for himself and I take one bite of it, and then eat my salad. Seems to work for me!

We ought to start a clothing pool! I hope to have some clothes soon that will be too big for me (I've given nearly everything away to Goodwill) I'd be happy to send them to someone here that can use them when I've completely undergrown them!

sew cornie 01-23-2010 10:59 AM

Chasing Hawk and Jwwskis - you are both so awesome!! Thanks for the inspiration!

Giving myself a gold star today. I've exercised 3 times this week! You have no idea how big that is for me. LOL. I know I have to make it a priority, so I've scheduled it in on the calendar (even though I use videos at home). And I've lost 2 lbs.

My goals this week are to exercise 4 times, and to switch out one cracker/carb snack to a fruit or veggie snack each day.

Thinking good thoughts for all of you!

janRN 01-23-2010 01:02 PM

Thanks for the reminder to eat enough calories to keep metabolism going. Some days I eat enough to sustain a Penn State linebacker then starve the next day to make up for it. My poor metabolism doesn't know what to do. I think writing food intake down will help.
Another problem: like a lot of people I'm real prone to depression this time of year so activity level has been zero (usually couch to fridge and back). I was walking a mile or so everyday and started doing that again this week. Noticed dog was getting kinda round, too, so this should help us both. I know activity helps lessen depression and speeds up metabolism.
Isn't it funny how we know these things, most are common sense but I need you guys to keep hammerin' into my thick head!!
Thank you all--Jan

http://caloriecount.about.com/cc/account/index.php Check this out! It will help you keep track of calories, and is fun to navigate for other helpful info. I like to watch my daily calorie intake and my burn meter. Thanks Charlee for the info on this site!!

purplemem 01-23-2010 03:14 PM

Count me on the weigh in. I'm at the top of the 200s, almost to 300. Health is awful. Diabetic, heart failure, and multiple blood clots in lungs. What I can't do is exercise or increase my heart rate at all. What I CAN do is stay on my diabetic diet for one day at a time, and walk in an indoor pool for 30 mins every other day. That is within my possibilities. I will be your cheerleader and example of what happens when you don't exercise. My bloodclots came from sitting too long in one spot... :-(

So GO! and report your movement progress along with food.
Hugs, MJ

barnbum 01-23-2010 04:47 PM

I don't need to lose much--but even the last 5 lbs can be tough! BUT I still need to develop strategies so things don't get out of hand. My trouble places are after school and evenings. I think being perimenopausal goofs up my appetite. :| I've tried decaf tea, but it doesn't work. So, after thinking it though, I made a soup that has very few points so I can eat as much as I want in the evenings. Here's what I did:

I put about a tbsp of butter and 2 tsp of olive oil in a deep fry pan and sautéed a small peeled, diced up eggplant and two small cut up summer squash with a bit of onion and maybe 15 cut up baby carrots. I put some of the spicy garlic in it, with dill, salt, and basil. I let it simmer for a bit. Then I added a whole carton (4 cups) of chicken broth--it was NO salt by Kitchen Basics. I added about half of a small can of tomato paste. It simmered for 15-20 min. Holy cow is it good!! It's perfect for warming up after chores. If I have points left I'll put bread pieces in it. It lasted for 4-5 spurts of hunger!

Aw MJ...we'll be your cheerleaders too! I *KNOW* you can do this...and you're going to be amazed at what it does for you! You may find that your diabetes goes away, or at least is controlled without meds...your blood pressure will drop...and as you get to where you can move more, the phlibitis (sp?) will go away. ~~HUGS~~ We're here for you, because we want you to be around a LONGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG time! :)

Charlee 01-23-2010 05:01 PM

Karla, that soup you made sounds yummy!! I think I need to make some!

purplemem 01-23-2010 05:17 PM

Thank you for the encouragement. I have multiple pulmonary emboli and a saddle embolis and dvt. (no phlebitis) I am very much blessed to be still breathing. Our hospital has only had 6 people live through lungs like mine. What I'm trying to do is reduce, and reduce my insulin intake (120 units daily). It would really help my survival chances.

Pats8e8 01-23-2010 06:11 PM

I'm in. I have been trying to do WW at home since about the end of August. I have lost 14 lbs, but can't seem to get past this point. I really need to lose another 20 to be at a healthy weight for my height. My daughter who had gained tons of weight when she broke her ankle 3 yrs. ago, started WW on her birthday and has lost 50 lbs so far. She puts me to shame! But I am trying still. I like the WW chili and the WW taco soup, really good and only 1 point per cup.

obie2 01-23-2010 06:29 PM

I want to join with you all. I have been reading this board for quite a while, but have not posted. In fact, I had not even registered. But, I need support with this endeavor as well as with my quilting. So here I am.
Hi Everyone.

Charlee 01-23-2010 06:46 PM

I'm loving everyone joining us! :)

obie2, Welcome to the board! Glad we got you to come out and play with us!

Lneal 01-23-2010 06:51 PM

Hi obie2!! Great to have you on board with us!! You will find a lot of expert advice here and lots of tips!! I was wondering if anybody has thought of posting their favorite low cal recipes in the " recipe section?"

obie2 01-23-2010 07:08 PM

AwwwGeee!!! I had just written a real nice loonnggg note or novelette. It went "pouff". I must have gotten timed out, or stumbled into gremlin country.

I'll try again, in a minute.

obie2 01-23-2010 07:13 PM

I have gotten some great, easy receipes off of the RealAge site. That's Dr. Oz's page. Also, EatingWell and the CalorieCount site too. I keep a food log, with calorie count and fat count. I try to stay at a 1200 cal plan and at 35 fat grams. Sometimes, I fail miserably. This holiday did me in. Too much food with all the eat out events I had to attend.

Quilt Mom 01-23-2010 07:33 PM

Okay, I admit it. I have a real problem. I lose weight, then it finds me again. First time it was 40 pounds off, and regained 20. Kept level for a few years. Moved and gained 60 pounds. Lost 40, gained 60... A broken bone and two surgeries later, I am needing to lose 80 pounds. I am going to 'weigh in'. That's my first commitment.

We just purchased a treadmill, so I will be using that any time I watch TV. My DH agreed to help me with this, and we have cut out desserts - now we have our fruit for dessert. Other changes are in the works.

Thanks for this thread, Lneal.

By the way, you probably wouldn't believe how long it has been since I even wore a dress. I can't bear the look of my legs...

purplemem 01-23-2010 07:56 PM

Quilt Mom - I don't even OWN a dress anymore. I'm right there with you...
