meanmom 07-30-2015 03:46 AM

Ok ladies are we ready for a new month. Last month I made a mistake and in one place I put that the theme for July was purple and in another place I put batiks. I plead temporary alzheimers!(or I was on vacation when I posted the thread) The correct theme for August is batiks but either will be fine.
SO lets all get to work on some healthy eating and exercise. We need to get in shap for all the bad things that tempt us between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Leann 07-30-2015 05:56 AM

Here I am again!

Thank you, Pat, for being our hostess.

Annaquilts 07-30-2015 06:23 AM

I am also in.

meanmom 07-30-2015 04:15 PM

Is anyone doing the row by row shop hop? I have picked up a few cute ones. I just had a friend send me one I wanted from northern Ohio. It is adorable but OMG looks like it might be a pain to make. It is a mermaid, really cute. The kit was $15 which isn't too bad. It has hand embroidery all over it and tons of beads etc. The embelishment kit for it was $90.(no that isn't a typo) I didn't get one of course. I think it might get the reward for the most difficult row of all of them. The shop is Quilters Fancy in Ohio. I will find a way to do most of it by machine.

Two Cats 07-31-2015 04:27 AM

How do I join this group?

Pam H 07-31-2015 05:51 AM

I'm in for August!
I am not doing the row by row but I did look up the rows for WI and MN and saw so many cute ones. I'll have to check out that one from Ohio. I wonder how many embellishment kits they have sold.

fmhall2 07-31-2015 08:48 AM

I am going to join again. A year or two ago I won a month with 16 lbs in one month, but then I started gaining it back, and got so discouraged I gave up. But I am in again. No, I am not doing the row by row, but it sounds interesting.

It's simple. Just say you want to join. Then join in on the chit chat. Maybe share your favorite diet and fitness tips. If you have some favorite healthy recipes, we'd love to hear about those too. We also love pics of what you are working on.

Pete 07-31-2015 01:17 PM

Join!!!!!!! Gosh darn, I need to lose.

Two Cats 07-31-2015 01:44 PM

OK I want to join, but not being the sharpest tack on the bulletin board...how do I chitchat? Just by following the August weight loss?

Leann 07-31-2015 04:28 PM

Welcome Two Cats,
You can subscribe to this thread; just go to 'thread tools'. That helps me find it easiest. Also, to be eligible to win the fat quarters, you need to send a private message to 'meanmom' for her address to send your entry. Then come back here and chat with us a bunch! I also think we are supposed to post at least once weekly to win.

Hoping that everyone is safe and being careful in the heat!

jmoore 08-01-2015 03:12 AM

I need to drop a few before my son's wedding... I'm in for August

meanmom 08-01-2015 08:21 AM

I was doing so well! I have had a house guest all week. I have been cutting back on carbs and until this week did well. I think I have had more bread this week than I have had in a whole month. UG! We had a girls day yesterday and I when out all day with my 3 SIL. Had a fish sandwich for lunch, it would have been not too bad if it wasn't dripping citrus mayonaise. The we had sub sandwiches for dinner. We just went out to breakfast and I had a sandwich on ciabatta bread, again dripping some sort of fancy mayonnaise, So yummy. On the way home we stopped at the Chocolate Factory. They have all kinds of handmade chocolates. The had a new kind of toffee and he offered us a sample. He accidently cut them too large and asked if that was OK, well hell yeah it is!. We are having bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwiches and corn for dinner. So bad. My guest leaves tonight. I guess I need to ride my bike 100 or more miles tomorrow to make up for the last few days. I only exercised 2x this past week too.
Time to start over once again.

Irishrose2 08-01-2015 08:28 AM

Cut my toffee too big, too.:D
I'm in. I need to drop 10 pounds and I might as well win some batiks doing it. Sounds confident. Yeah, right. My massage therapist wants me ride my bike or trike more. Between his 'encouragement' and this competition, I just might do it. It's time to declutter my body and my house.

I am losing weight and getting healthier.
Judy

Pam H 08-01-2015 10:15 AM

When is your son getting married, jmoore? Mine is getting married 10/10 in China. We bought our airline tickets a few days ago and our daughter is driving to Chicago monday to get our visas. I just found out this morning my dress should be a bright color and/or shiny. Yeah, just what I want.....not! Our son also told us it is Chinese tradition for the groom's parents to buy the couple a house. That's not happening! I plan/hope to lose 15 lbs before the wedding. More would be better but probably not realistic.
I'll take one of the too large samples of toffee!
I did pretty well last month with my eating and also getting in some walking. Even lost a few pounds. Last night we went to a ballgame and ate ballpark food for our dinner. I even topped it off with a sundae. Was happy to see that I hadn't gained any back when I weighed myself this morning.
Some of you might remember a couple of months ago I thought I was a day or 2 away from getting under 200 lbs. Well, after gaining 7, I have finally lost those and gotten under 200. Woohoo! Now to figure out how to never get above it again.

meanmom 08-01-2015 02:36 PM

Sounds like you are doing well Pam. Irish I NEED the batiks. (I also need to lose weight) I received your 3 FQ today Pam. I need them too.
Don't forget to PM me your loss for July. I have heard from a couple of people and the race is close.
My house guest just left, hopefully I can get back on track. We just ate BLT sandwiches for dinner. Bike ride in the morning. I am going to try for 25 miles.

Irishrose2 08-01-2015 04:37 PM

I just sweat off a pound walking the dogs. Too bad it'll be back as soon as I drink something. When I get hydrated, I'll take the tricycle out. I had some neurothapy dizziness earlier so I'll use the tricycle thought the regular bike is easier to ride.
Declutter for today? My son had to cut a hole in the laundry room wall to repair thr hot water heater. He fixed the wall, I painted it, but no one sorted through the dog paraphelia that hangs on an expandable rack there.

What do you yoga people wear to class in the summer? Spandex is too hot. Last week I wore cotton knit pants and top. Halfway through, I had the top tucked under my bra to get some my middle some air.

meanmom 08-02-2015 04:07 AM

I am heading out for a bike ride as soon as I finish breakfast. It is cool this morning but is going to get hot later. Hopefully I can figure out how to hook my new bike rack onto my car so I can load my bike and ride a different section of the bike path. I live about 1 mile from a bike path that some day will go all the way from the bottom of Ohio to the top. Most of it is complete but there are still sections missing. the section I usually ride goes 7 miles out so I have to do part of it 2x or I finish up my ride on the street. There is a new section but for some unknown reaseon it is almost always closed. I have ridden it a couple of times and it is complete, no one knows why they keep closing it.
I am frustrated with myself because 2 weeks ago I was down 7.5 pounds for the month. Not anymore. All of the bread the last week and a half has killed that. I had bagels, pretzels, pizza, pasta, several sandwiches. Grrr! I was doing so well! New month new start! I am going out to lunch Wednesday and I will behave myself!

Leann 08-02-2015 09:31 AM

Pat, have you announced the fabric theme for Sept & Oct? I'd like to mail my next three entries at the same time, if possible.

TIA.

createfourpaws 08-02-2015 03:19 PM

I have been gone for awhile, so it is time to get back. I will be mailing off my batik on Monday.

Life has been crazy this past year. A year ago this month, lost my dad while I was enjoying a cruise I won from work. I think he knew he wouldn't see me when I got back, as he gave me the biggest hug ever and told me to enjoy myself. Mom has had it very rough, she is slowly getting back to normal. Also found out that she is diabetic, so with me also being diabetic, I have been encouraging her to cook healthier. Since it is just the two of us, she is doing the cooking since I am working for us. This is really working for us both.

I have also gotten an insulin pump which has my blood sugars in better control and I am doing much better.

Best of luck to all of us who are losing weight.

Jim's Gem 08-02-2015 05:51 PM

I am in again for August.
I accidentally sent my 3 mos worth of FQ's to Cindy. Ooops. She said that she would send them on to you
I will claim temporary Alzheimer's as well. I have been so busy lately!

Annaquilts 08-03-2015 05:14 AM

Off to go snorkeling today. I am finally getting some excercise in but I have also been packing in some food. The scale I have access to right now is off so I will weigh again when I have my regular scale from home. Now I need to stick to the diet wit out the feed back of daily weigh ins. This is hard for me.

Annaquilts 08-04-2015 07:24 AM

Anyone want to talk air popcorn? You know the stuff now sold all over with advertising on the bag with how few calories it has per cup. I am on a current kick and am eating 3 to 6 cups a day as part of my diet. I actually replaced my bread, flatout, with 3 cups of popcorn. They are both about a 100 calories. When I air pop my own popcorn it taste like styrofoam but the on in the bag has a couple extra calories per cup for oil and it makes the difference. Any favorites? The brand I am currently eating is Cornopolis 33 calories a cup. Part of why I got this brand is I like the color of the packaging and it was the lowest calories from the three brands at the store.

Leann 08-04-2015 09:11 AM

Anna, I LOVE popcorn, but it literally HATES me. Tears my stomach up. Of course, if I didn't think I had to eat the whole bucket, might make a difference.

How wonderful that you found a workable substitute for other carbs. Best wishes!

createfourpaws 08-04-2015 10:57 AM

I love popcorn, and I always use real butter whenever I do have it. It is for me a treat. I have tried other ways of flavoring the popcorn, but I want as close to natural as I can get. I have been getting away from almost all processed foods. This has also help my diabetes be in better control.

I also find that I really shouldn't eat popcorn as an evening snack.

createfourpaws 08-04-2015 10:58 AM

They are on the way to meanmom. I have sent her the tracking number for yours and mine in the same package.

meanmom 08-04-2015 07:29 PM

Leann I have the themes for August and September- August- batik, September is blue.
Welcome back Cindy. It has been a while. So sorry to hear about your dad. Hope you enjoyed your cruise. I have heard of others getting the insulin pump and they have also had good success with it.
I went for a bike ride on Sunday. It was such a nice day so I rode about 24 miles. When I got home my DS wanted to go for a ride so we went about 10 miles. That was a little bit too much for my legs and I was tired on Monday. My knee was fine, my butt was sore from the seat, I need a new one. I am hoping to do that on Thursday. I did 45 minutes on the elliptical today. Tomorrow I will do a little bit of arm work. I just froze corn and am canning tomatoes. 7 pints tonight but there are a bunch more to can tomorrow. Not sure how many I will finish because I need to make a raspberry pie for my GS birthday party and I am meeting a friend to go to the LQS and out to lunch. We are going to a Mexican place. I know they have some good choices. Hopefully I can eat the right thing.
Several people from work are doing a plank challenge. I am trying to do it. Over a 1 month period you work up from a 20 second plank to a 2 minute one. I will see. I did 2 this morning for 30 seconds and 2 this evening. Not sure I actually have any muscles in my stomach. Hopefully this will help with that.
Good luck everyone.
Pat

crafty-kid 08-04-2015 07:30 PM

Is it too late to join? I haven't cared about my weight...gave up. Now it's time to think about getting back into a shape other than round! I'd love to join the group if that's okay?!

Annaquilts 08-05-2015 01:13 AM

Meanmom DH and I are wondering what a plank challenge is.

Irishrose2 08-05-2015 07:22 AM

Pat, that's a long 30 seconds! Are you doing regular planks or low ones? How will the winner be determined? Longest hold or most repetitions of 2 minutes? You are amazing, riding that far, then canning tomatoes. Send some of your energy this way.

I have to have my picture taken for church this evening and I have no idea what to wear. Just anything I grab, I guess.

Thank you Cindy. Sorry you had to forward them on!

Leann 08-06-2015 08:45 AM

I go out of my way to NOT be a whiner, but somedays I just get overwhelmed. This has been the summer from hell for my family.

There is the on-going challenge for my son, his treatment program, and his student status.

My parents, in their 80's, have been fighting with Sears since June to repair their a/c. I think the jerks who keep stringing them along should try to sleep for 3 months in the Texas heat without air.

My daughter has extreme plumbing issues - has not had water for 3 weeks and now is forced to find a new place to live, all the while her 'ailing' (lazy, worthless) father is telling her how wrong she is for choosing her family (her husband, son, and 3 daughters) over him.

Then this morning, I learned that my 17 yr old nephew tried to commit suicide, again. For five years he has been treated for extreme depression after his first suicide attempt. When my son started having issues, I understood what my brother was going through with the fear and watching him every minute. My son has never been suicidal, but there were times he acted so strange that it scared the crap out of me.

Sadly, the only thing I can do is pray and wait. This is so exhausting.

meanmom 08-06-2015 08:56 AM

I just realized today is August 6th and I didn't post the winner for July...... AnnaQuilts with a loss of 7.4 pounds. Good job. You will ahve to let us in on your secrets.
Pat

meanmom 08-06-2015 09:02 AM

I didn't print out the details of the plank challenge but basicaly you start out with a 20 second plank for a couple of days. No rules on how many you do. You increase your time by 10 to 15 seconds every few days until you work up to a 2 minute plank at the end of 28 days. Not sure if I will ever make the 2 minute one. I did 2 30 second ones in the morning and 2 more in the evening. I have no abdominal muscles so I will have to take it slowly. It said to do them how eer you can that you need to make sure you keep your body straight. I do mine on my elbows mostly because it bothers my wrists but you don't work your arms as well that way. A plank is supposed to work so many muscles at once.
WOw Leann you have a lot going on. I will pray for things to get better.

Irishrose2 08-06-2015 03:59 PM

For Leann;
Dear If it doesn't kill me, it makes me stronger,
Thank you, but I'm strong enough.
Sincerely, Leann

I'm sorry you are going through so much. And you have no control those situations over which makes it even harder. Will be praying for you, too.
Judy

Congratulations, Anna. Today is the 6th so there are 25 more days until weigh in. I made some healthy treats that I'm sure would result in a temporary weight loss if I were to eat very many. PB, oatmeal, ground flax seeds, toasted coconut, a little honey, vanilla and, of course, chocolate chips. Not bad, except I don't like flax. I'd use a little more honey, but these were made for a friend who watches his sugar carefully. Luckily, I only kept two, so no harm done.

Pat, I can do both a low plank and a high plank - I actually find the high easier, but my shoulder won't let me transition between the two. No Chaturanga in yoga for me yet.

crafty-kid 08-06-2015 04:33 PM

Okay my package of Aug and Sept fabric went out in the mail today.....Now to walk some miles and lose some weight to win some cool batiks from all of you. haha! I'll be happy with losing the pounds! Nice cooler weather around MN right now.

meanmom 08-06-2015 04:52 PM

I have gained the last 2 days. Not sure how? I ate a taco salad yesterday that did not agree with my stomach at all. Not sure how that can make me gain?
I finished canning tomatoes today. I made 8 pints of whole tomatoes yesterday, 7 quarts and 7 pints of juice today. We were supposed to go to my brothers lake house for the weekend but had to cancel at the last minute. So now I also have a gluten free raspberry pie staring at me and begging me to eat it.
I has rained all day here. I went out this afternoon and it was pouring and foggy, yuck! Usually by now all of our grass is dead unless we water it. No watering this year. It just keeps raining. We almost never have to cut our grass in July and have been cutting it more than once a week. Weird summer.

Leann 08-07-2015 07:16 AM

Wanted to drop a hello before heading out for physical therapy. I've not been doing any on my own, so gotta change that today. I have to be making a smidgen of progress. The last pain pill I took yesterday was @ 4pm. Since I couldn't remember when my last dose was, I didn't take another before bed. (I usually write it down, but didn't yesterday for some reason) Anyway, I slept thru the night without pain. Definitely had pain when I woke. But I am pleased.

Thank you Judy - you are spot on target. All I can do is sit back and watch. I've also heard that phrase with the addition of "I wish You didn't think me so strong." I learned this morning that DD & hubby have decided to move into their own place. They were coerced into moving in with her dad almost 3 years ago - the man needs a keeper and it was just easier for her to be there to make sure he took his meds, etc. (He is 62), than to continue to exhaust herself with the back & forth. Plus, he had the space and they were expecting babies #3 & 4! To say that things have spiraled downward is too kind - and he pretty much forced her into a position where she had to choose - him or her family. Thank you for your continued prayers. Today she is telling him that they are leaving. It will be a messy conversation.

meanmom, I like the idea of a plank challenge. This is probably something that I can do now that I am getting on the floor & back up on my own. Like Judy, I'm not sure I can transition in the upper & lower positions - but I can try. I wish we had your rain. Not a drop has fallen since June - only triple digits in the forecast. Extreme fire danger.

Anna, I have to say that you are a beast with this losing weight! Congratulations dear lady! You'll be clothes shopping again real soon, won't you? I hope you are buying used since you won't wear a new garment long enough to show ANY wear. You are such an inspiration!

I am down a couple of pounds for the month so far. I am at my lowest weight in 2 years - and that was after my medical scare and hysterectomy. During my June hospital stays, I cut way back on what I ate and I've been trying to continue that at home. I also try to limit my soda to 2 a day, but that is creeping back up. Anybody up for a challenge?
For me, I wanna go the weekend without ANY soda. (I don't drink diet) For you, it may be something like nothing to eat after xx PM. I also need to drink water. Many days, it's only soda, tea, or coffee. Not good.

Irishrose2 08-07-2015 07:50 AM

Leann, there's no reason you have transition from high plank to low plank - they are two separate exercises. Even Sun Salutations in yoga has modifications. I am pleased enough to have regained the use of my shoulders after having two frozen shoulders after a torn rotator cuff that I accept a few limitations.

Tow dogs under my feet. Michigan sold some nasty fireworks and people are still shooting them off. Last night were big ones - we had to cut our walk short. I needed that walk. I was very sad for some reason and needed the lake and a pretty sunset. Oh, well, such is life.

Leann, good luck on your soda fast. That stuff is not a healthy option. I know it was a factor in my bone loss to osteoporosis and I only drank one a day. What can I give up? Not sugar - I have a family reunion tomorrow. How 'bout adding instead? I will drink more water and add lemon, cucumber and ginger to make it cleansing. I'm not a fan of cucumber so it will be something I consciously do for my health.

What to take to the reunion that can travel 3 hours? I have a new recipe for a zucchini/corn salad. That and a batch of cookies may do. There were too many creamy desserts and too much potato salad last year.

I AM getting healthier and losing weight.
Judy
