We always laughed at these. Lets see, sweats, long sleeve t shirt slippers. I did comb my hair this morning does that count? LOL
|
ROFLOL! That is funny. I do own a dress - just haven't worn it. I always tell friends to feel free to drop in as long as they don't care if the house is dirty or I am! If i couldn't sew in my pj's or "comfortable" clothes, I'd never get anything done. Do you think the sewing machine really notices if we don't dress up and comb our hair? LOL!

I have an etiquette book from the 1920s I think. It is a hoot. Our world has really changed.

Uh, okay, I'll try anything to improve my sewing. But I'll have to ask my wife for all those things.

I have more for later, maybe...my DMIL gave me "The Marriage Guide" from 1917!! I haven't laughed as hard in YEARS as I did reading some of that one!! |
hehehe...that is great....just goes to show you how far we have really let ourselves go! Of course one only has to run to the grocery in the middle of the day to see that....around here pj bottoms, dirty tee shirts, flip flops and NO bra are considered dressing up!

I'm reading through the Singer Sewing Book by Mary Brooks Picken from 1949, and I know now what I've been doing wrong with my sewing! It MUST be the reason my points never match and seams aren't straight! My comments are in red.
And I quote: "When you sew, make yourself as attractive as possible. Go through a beauty ritual of orderliness. Have on a clean dress. (I don't think I OWN a dress!!) Be sure your hands are clean, fingernails smooth-a nail file and pumice will help. Always avoid hangnails. Keep a little bag full of French chalk near your sewing machine where you can pick it up and dust your fingers at intervals. This not only absorbs the moisture on your fingers, but helps to keep your work clean. Have your hair in order, powder and lipstick put on with care. Looking attractive is a very important part of sewing, because if you are making something for yourself, you will try it on at intervals in front of the mirror, and you can hope for better results when you look your best. Again, sewing imust be approached with the idea that you are going to enjoy it, and if you are constantly fearful that a visitor will drop in or your husband come home and you will not look neatly put together, you will not enjoy your sewing as you should. Therefore "spruce up" at the begging so that you are free to enjoy every part of any sewing you do." :D:D:D I should sell my fabric and machines now...it's hopeless! I couldn't ever comply with the suggestions. Because of allergies I had to stop using all makeup including lipstick. |
Oh, my, they would haul me off to the looney bin if I had to do all that before sewing! I'm doing good to comb my hair and brush my teeth. One day, a friend called to come by and pick up a pattern. I had 3 sewing machines set up in my LR, fabric everywhere and was still in my jammies (I HAD put on a bra! HeHe). It was very cold that day and my jammies were just too warm and comfortable. When my friend arrived, she said "oh, wish I had worn my jammies, too"!! We both just cracked up laughing.
I'll confess: I spend most days at home in my jammies. In summer, I have these cute zip front swing dresses/robes that I wear. My 6yo grandson asked me why I wore my jammies all day!!!! I just don't have the figure for those cute little jogging/yoga pants/tees that all the young mothers wear! |
