I don't care for them, but I remember my Dad having sardines on crackers for lunch on the weekends!

Sadiemae 03-31-2011 07:14 PM

Not for my poodle, she gets pumpkin!!!

Ramona Byrd 03-31-2011 07:29 PM

They're supposed to be good for you. When we were heavily into back packing, we always had my home made trail bread, and soda crackers and sardines. I still am not fond of them but do eat some every week or two, just because they are supposed to be good for you. And other ocean fish are becoming full of vile stuff from pollution.

lalaland 03-31-2011 07:32 PM

I like them in tomato sauce.

That explains why I don't like them, they are good for me. So sad, why can't things that are good for me taste good???

Krystyna 04-01-2011 03:41 AM

Yum, yum, yum! On rye bread with thousand Island dressing and thin sliced onions. Tooo good. Anchovies - love 'em!

marthe brault-hunt 04-01-2011 04:02 AM

I usually don't eat fish. But I''ll never forget that meal in Portimao, Portugal, A little shack on a pier near the fishing boats, We were eating outside on a table made of planks, sitting on benches, We were served a salad, fresh slices of tomatoes set on lettuce with Bermuda onion rings, then came a plate of sardines cooked over coals, with boiled potatoes and green beans with a glass of rosé.This is a meal I'll never forget, but I will never open a can of sardines, two different worlds,

jitkaau 04-01-2011 04:08 AM

Depends on the quality and how you prepare them. Santa Marias are my particular favourite, and I like them as a snack on toast with lemon pepper on them. Quite healthy as well.

jansquiltn 04-01-2011 04:09 AM

Use them to cat the cats the neighbor keeps bringing home and doesn't spay or neuter or give any shots/flea med. I take them to the shelter where they have a 100% home finder rate. So the cats win.

Smithly 04-01-2011 04:24 AM

Luv 'em...good for too!

We eat sardines for lunch quite often. They are high in vitamin D. Use anchovies in Cesar salad dressing.

Ack!

Clueless Quilter 04-01-2011 07:11 AM

I love them. I just had some for lunch yesterday that were packed in a Louisana hot sauce, my favorite.

feline fanatic 04-01-2011 07:19 AM

Seems we are evenly split. I love them!

Anchovies I like to cook with but find them too salty to eat straight from the can on their own. Can't have caesar salad dressing without them and they are excellent in a putanesca sauce.

arimuse 04-01-2011 07:30 AM

on a sailboat, perfect boat food - some crackers and sardines are fine, easy to carry and store. Hubs and I are lucky - we like the same yukky things! lots of onions and garlic, sardines, etc. sharet

Just a quick story about sardines....my darling husband one day added a can of them to mac and cheese. They stunk the house up so bad he took them outside for the cats, and they smelled them and began burying them....never laughed so hard in my life....His idea to add sardines came from me adding tuna to mac and cheese....we like that, but will avoid the sardines again! HAHA!

linhawk 04-01-2011 08:31 AM

Love them. Smashum up with onion and spread it on saltines. Love anchovies, clams, smoked oysters, yummmmmm.

stitchofclass2 04-01-2011 08:35 AM

I love them. Have eaten them since I was a child. My DIL loves them too. She puts one on her favorite cracker and a (canned) roasted red pepper. MMmmmmmm.

Julianna 04-01-2011 08:36 AM

Love anchovies, not so much sardines.

Sardines and Ritz crackers.....yummy

Scrap Happy 04-01-2011 08:44 AM

Too salty. I’ve seen recipes that say sardines taste better when they are cooked and will improve the flavor of the dish but I just haven’t been able to do this.

I'm not big on seafood even though I come from a famiily who loved it.

Kherrin 04-01-2011 08:45 AM

Smells too much like cat food for me!!! My DH is not allowed to even open them in the house...LOL.

The oysters are good, deep fried or smoked. Clams are okay for me, but no Sardines. I don't like the looks, taste or smell of them either.

I think you are confusing sardines and anchovies. Anchovies are the salty ones that lose that excess saltiness when combined with other foods and cooked.

Sardines are much bigger than anchovies, come in a larger size tin, smell just like cat food when opened and are not salted in the canning process like anchovies.

cafegold2 04-01-2011 10:37 AM

You Avatar cat is beautiful. Does the cat shed?

cafegold2 04-01-2011 10:48 AM

As a Child my dad and I would eat "little fishies"from Delmonte in a large oval can with tomato sauce. I also love herring in cream sauce. Last Spring in Holland we stopped at an outdoor shop in a town square. They were preparing herring mildly pickled to eat right there. I have pictures of DH holding the tail and lowering the headless cleaned fish into his mouth for a bite.
Yes I did try it. More firm than sardines but truly delicious.

cafegold2 04-01-2011 10:53 AM

Mousie, They are cleaned of inards . You can eat the bones or not . Full of calcium. They do lift out easily. I'm not crazy for the crunch of the back bone.

gunny148 04-01-2011 11:12 AM

Before i went in the Marines (1972) i work Construction, an old black man his name was Joe he was teaching me to do what ever was needed. Well i worked with Joe for over a year
and for lunch we would have sardines Soda crackers and a RC Cola. still eat then today

jad1044 04-01-2011 11:27 AM

Oh yeah! Those in mustard sauce! Kippered Snacks years ago with crackers was a whole meal - but I can't find them anymore, but they sure were cheap enough - 10 cents a big can..... just loved them.
