Silly question - How do you refer to a cat or a dog besides "cat" or "dog"?

In my family:

Cats were/are: felinis, puddies, catlets, meows

Dogs: furface, puppy, doglet

Do you - or your family members - call them "silly" names? (besides their "assigned" name such as "Her Royal Majesty, the Princess Cat")

charley26 05-29-2018 02:06 PM

The cat, and the dog. If I am calling them to me/for food/ or issue a command, then I call them by their name. Needless to say, it is practically impossible to issue a command to the cat, other than a sharp shout if he goes near the bird table.

charley26 05-29-2018 02:11 PM

Again, to me, a dog is a dog - not a baby/'fur baby'/lapdog etc. I get totally annoyed with seeing 'handbag' dogs, or carried everywhere etc; I often wonder how these dogs feel too.

Boston1954 05-29-2018 02:13 PM

Poochie Face, dooshe, (cats)

ILoveToQuilt 05-29-2018 02:14 PM

My German Shepherd is: Baby Girl and my Malamutt (1/2 malamute, 1/2 huskie...all attitude) is Meathead or Baby Meathead (she is soooooooo stubborn!) If not using their nicknames, they are Chienne and Molly.

Dogs are dogs or puppies (sometimes pups), cats are cats or kittens (sometimes kitties).

cathyvv 05-29-2018 02:26 PM

Husband is allergic to cats, so no 'pet' names for cats. Dogs - When we had them, I always called them "Puppy" or "Pup". They knew who I was talking to...

I agree. Leave the baby at home!

PamelaOry 05-29-2018 02:41 PM

We have “Asher badger party crasher “, “Ellie belly”, “Lubalu (Lulu), and “Maggles”.

Stitchnripper 05-29-2018 03:09 PM

Right now we have grandpuppies. The two that we live closer to and see regularly I call them "the pupsters" and Mr Stitchnripper says to them when he sees them "how are my babies!" In that high voice and they love it. The other one loves far away and his name is Wilson but we call him Wilsie.

GingerK 05-29-2018 03:11 PM

At the moment we are petless by choice. But we do wrangle the 'Grandpuppy' on occasion. She can be quite aggressive in certain situations and it is easier to let Nana and Grandpa have her than trying to find a kennel that would take her. Our cats all had pet names as well as their own. It all depended on the situation. They were the sweetest boys--Chester my Polar Bear (and my avatar) and The Flash my Black Bear. Our dog, a border/some-type-spaniel cross, was usually referred to a Miss Molly or Molly Dear or sometimes as "Good Golly Miss Molly"!! The only time I got coddled was when I would be sitting with both cats in my lap/on my legs, and needed something. Didn't want to disturb the babies:)

pocoellie 05-29-2018 05:06 PM

We have 2 male dogs, before we had 2 females, so we call them the boys, before them were the girls. Regardless, I do classify them as my fur babies, they are members of my family and they are very missed when they pass over the Rainbow Bridge, as are ones that passed decades ago.

dunster 05-29-2018 05:27 PM

My standard poodle will be two in August. I call him Puppy Doodle. His real name is Drake.

Pat M. 05-29-2018 05:50 PM

My Chihuahua was called Francisco but we ended up calling him Paco the Taco.

Kitsie 05-29-2018 06:19 PM

Love those!

Kitsie 05-29-2018 06:23 PM

We named my adopted dog (chihuahua) "Rico Suave". I recently adopted another dog that had a name already, "Chico Suave" Poor confused guys! Chico is now Chi-chi. Don't know who was more confused before the renaming, the boys or me!

bearisgray 05-29-2018 06:38 PM

Cats were also "fee-dee-oots" I have no idea why.

joyce blint 05-29-2018 06:43 PM

I lovingly call my cats fleabags. The vet told me that term is one that is equally used ....both lovingly and not so lovingly for pets.

Nanny's dollface 05-29-2018 06:54 PM

Carlos is a cheeweenie who is very mischievous- so his silly name is Monkey Butt

quiltingshorttimer 05-29-2018 06:56 PM

We have dogs and horses--always! Current dogs are Sheba (the neurotic one) and Whitey--who we really did not think about name much cause he was a "dump" dog that our other dogs at the time allowed to stay (we live in the country and scumbags dump their dogs when they don't want them ) Our horses are Lil Red (who has a fancy registration name but she's a little red horse) and Pepper and the latest, a white pony that the g-boys named SnowFlake--but we are calling her Miss Piss cause she escapes the pasture wayyyyy too often. She will be sold in the next few weeks--g-boys live too far away to ride often enough and she needs a frequent rider.

sandy l 05-30-2018 03:10 AM

Have 2 cats. Indy or Mom, 'cause she's the mother of Cye, most commonly called "Bubblebutt" as she's slightly overweight:)

SusieQOH 05-30-2018 03:23 AM

My pets rarely are spoken to by their real names but somehow they know. Carmello is Angel Face or Mommy's darling, Mookie is sweet boy, or Mook or Mookie Wookie, Baby is usually Baby or baby girl. Lately we've been calling her Buddha b/c she has a pin head and a huge belly lol
I always called Sonia "Sis". Same with all my other pets. All kinds of "terms of endearment".

One of my boys adopted 2 cats (brother and sister as well) and their names were/are Dylan and Dash but somehow they call them Pickle and Sis.
Interestingly I was reading a memoir by Brian Wilson (Beach Boys) and he had 2 children named Dylan and Dash. I'm wondering if the original owner of those cats named them because of Brian!
And my avatar Mabel- we used to call her boo-boo boolinski!! haha

Wanabee Quiltin 05-30-2018 06:00 AM

I have four female dogs and they are referred to as ‘The Girls’.

Snooze2978 05-30-2018 06:31 AM

My little prissy missy is called "The Brat" most times cause that's what she is most times. She has me on a time table to fit her moods but then I most times allow it. When I get fed up with her attitude I usually throw her out the back door for a while. That usually changes her toon for about 5 minutes. We get along pretty well and right now if its not too extremely hot outside she likes to laze around outside either on the porch swing looking out into her domain or under the raspberry bushes out back. She has a kitty condo in the livingroom, a bed on every floor and a window seat in my bedroom. Its not like she's a pampered kitty or anything but I feel she should have all the luxeries I can give her. She's still my little baby to me..................even though she's a Brat at times.

DJ 05-30-2018 06:34 AM

Talking to DH "your cat" (especially when "his cat" gets into trouble). LOL

Macybaby 05-30-2018 06:52 AM

We refer to cats as rats -

sylviasmom 05-30-2018 07:33 AM

The dog is formal name is Junior T(he) Pup, mostly called Pup. The cat is Gizmo, from the movie Gremlins, because of her coloring and the orange diamond on her forehead. I call her Gizzie Girl. Her mother was Naku Narekeet but was called Kookoo Kitty or just Koo.

Innov8R 05-30-2018 07:50 AM

No one is mentioning "Kitty" for the cats. I call my wonderful black Aussie mix "Sweetie" most of the time. Her name is Osita.

Cheshirepat 05-30-2018 08:47 AM

Every cat has it's name, and about a dozen nicknames I won't bore you with. But we do have certain 'collective nicknames' for them i.e. the fuzzbuts, the cattersons, furry sharks...

I get pretty creative with the naming/nicknaming, lol...but they go by Graham, Spencer, Tara and Jack. They all have my heart wrapped around their paws.

Doggramma 05-30-2018 09:23 AM

We refer to the dogs as the puppers or the guys. My daughter calls them the babies but I can't get on board with that.

rainbowzebra 05-30-2018 09:30 AM

Loved reading all these posts. I'll start by telling you all I am one cat short of crazy, with that being said we feed 14 cats at the moment. Some completely wild and only come to eat others we can pet. Only one of them did I pick to live with us, the rest have got here on there own (with the help of the low life's that dumped them). They all have names and some have. Nick names. They are all my fur babies. I love them all but have to confess I do have a favorite. Her name is Wild Thing aka "the. Queen". She gives me the unconditional love only a pet can give. I thank God everyday for them but also pray nobody dumps any more off in our area.

Ugh! You're a good human to take care of them. Any chance there is a TNR group in your area? (Trap, Neuter, Release) At least the numbers could be kept down... It's awful how many dumped pets there are out there.

rainbowzebra 05-30-2018 10:16 AM

They are all neutered except the new one we took in I think in January who gave us 4 kittens in early April and she has an appointment June 8th, and two males who are really wild, they run at the site of us, but I see them in the food dish. And now of course the 4 kittens. Will have to look into some place to get some reduced cost but they are up for adoption in about 2 more weeks. Like I said "one cat short of crazy" here, just can't stand to see them hungry and homeless.

Totally agree with this sentiment. I care for animals in my charge, but I have had it with this anthropomorphic attitude with/to animals.

pocoellie 05-30-2018 10:28 AM

People that dump animals or abuse them should be shot in my opinion.

We call our Ginger cat Little-Lord-Flaunt-Your-Voice because he sounds like a lion prowling the Serengetti in the middle of the night !!!

feline fanatic 05-30-2018 12:02 PM

As I have no human kids my pets are like my children to me in terms of how much I care about them and how much they enrich my life. But I like my dogs (and cats) big so no I don't carry them around. Dog, aside from their names and nicknames are often refered to as "pupsters". Cats are often referred to as "highness" or "your royal highness". They do fancy themselves royalty but I won't hesitate to use my spray bottle when needed.

especially when you go into a store and see them peeing on the floor at the food shelves (really happened in a CVS) or licking produce (grocery store); and nibbling, pooping, etc. that I have seen in other stores. I have literally observed these happening in various stores. It is disgusting but stores can't or won't) do anything any more because it could be a 'therapy' animal. I think 'therapy' animals, , gerbil, snake, tarantula, rat, etc., should be trained and certified the same as any service dog. Yes I have seen these animals being claimed as being needed for 'therapy'. They are a health hazard and completely unsanitary. I have reported to the health department and to the stores managers, but they say that they can't do anything. I don't want someones animal peeing or pooping in my food.

The above criteria would also keep a lot of "humanoid" creatures out of the stores.

I have 3 human kids but my furkids are my babies too :D

I feed a bunch of squirrels that live in the trees occasionally and I have named several.... Spots and Fraidy and Fuzzy are a few. OK, OK, I know, I'm only a little old silly lady! :)

Clarification: The squirrels live in the trees all the time. I feed them upon occasion! Whew, I'm sure glad I got that straightened out!
