Mine was cauliflower. Couldn't stand the stuff. And peas made me throw up. My mom said I had to eat my veggies, but that didn't mean they would stay down!

My mother didn't even try to feed me most vegetables. (Kind of a shame, since I like many of them now.)

One night, she tried to force stewed tomatoes down me. Wouldn't let me leave the dinner table for three hours. This was a night when we had company over, too.

Understand, she'd never even tried to get me to eat stewed tomatoes before. The idea was that when I'd been little, I'd liked fresh tomatoes for a while, and then I suddenly refused to eat them. So she figured I'd like them if I only tried them again.

The thing is, to this day I don't like cooked tomatoes. I use raw ones in my recipes and only add them in at the end to warm them up.

It wasn't until college that I even considered trying tomatoes again. They smelled wonderful in the dorm salad bar, and I finally tried fresh ones.

Looking back, I think she probably gave me one that was overripe or had a rotten spot one day, and that was what I didn't like. I was too small to know why it tasted bad, to explain to her, so all I could say was that it didn't taste right.

One more story. I was invited to a school friend's once for lunch. This was a bit awkward, as her parents happened to be physicians who had a joint practice together - and they turned out to be my mother's gynecologists! So of course my mother wanted me to be on my best behavior. And I was the kind of kid who wanted adults to like me, anyway.

So I get to my friend's house, and her mother says, "I hope you're hungry!" and I say, "Oh yes, I am!"

And she serves a 7-layer salad. I hated almost all vegetables at that point. Cucumbers and carrots were okay, but not all the rest of what was in that salad. I managed to separate every piece of shredded cheese from those veggies to try to get something in me, but there was no way to fake liking it. I kept hoping it wasn't the main course, but that was all there was.

And she kept saying, "I don't know why you wouldn't like it. I put everything in it." And there was no polite way to say I hated salad, hated all the things she put in it, so I just kept smiling bravely and assuring her I liked it but that I must not have been as hungry as I'd thought I was.

I always wondered if my mother put her up to it, thinking I might eat vegetables for a friend's parent. I mean, who seves salad (just vegetables, except for the bits of cheese) to a kid as the main lunch course?

canned peas! Cannot stand the smell of them to this day and will not eat them not even if DH and DDs are having them for a veggie. I just eat something else.

Asparagus and oysters yuck! Still can't stand the smell of either.

Spam! Can not stand the smell. Husband likes it so if I am gone he will have it. I can tell the minute I walk in the house what he had for supper. Makes me want to open all the windows.

Green beans. When I was around 5 years old, I had a stomach virus. That night my mother made dinner with green beans as a side dish. I still didn't feel good and said I couldn't eat them. My mother told me to eat them. I did and promptly became ill again on them (at the table no less).

I don't like green beans to this day. Don't like the taste or the smell.
