Could someone please tell me what is the point with the following TV "reality" shows?
Kendra
Bad Girls Club
Kardashians
Real Housewives of anywhere
Jersey Shore

OK, I get the reality shows like Ax Men, etc, people working, or Little People, etc, people with an unusual life situation.

But as far as I can see, NOTHING happens on these other ones. Any time I have tuned in (and it is not for long) people are just sitting around talking (at best) and hollering (at worst).

Are we supposed to be fascinated because they are "famous"?
I must be getting old, I don't even know why these people are famous or who they are.

erstan947 01-15-2011 07:29 AM

I do not wish to insult anyone but what amazes me is there is a market for these kind of programing. I like "channel" Quilting Board the best:)

cjomomma 01-15-2011 07:42 AM

I find them foolish and only for ppl that have nothing better to do. Not to sound mean but I think those shows are just plain stupid.

isnthatodd 01-15-2011 07:43 AM

I have enough drama in my own life that I don't need to hear made up stuff. And if I don't have anything going on, I can come here and try to cheer up someone real who is having real problems or frustrations.

pocoellie 01-15-2011 07:44 AM

I very rarely watch TV, as far as I'm concerned there's nothing worth watching, in my opinion.

bobbie1 01-15-2011 07:45 AM

Maybe it is to show us how the other "half" lives?? No offense intended but I don't care how they live. Wouldn't it be nice to have shows like Walton Mountain, Little House on the Prairie, Leave it to Beaver, etc...shows that were family friendly and left us with positive images..morals? Maybe I am showing my age but I think maybe it could make a big difference in the world if we took some of the violence off the screen. Ok..will step down from my box. Lol !!

amandasgramma 01-15-2011 07:50 AM

I don't wish to insult anyone either, however, of the people I DO know that watch these shows, I hear the same line...........1) I don't quilt/do crafts because I don't have time and 2) I'm single because there are no good men/women out there. Well, if you sit in front of the tv and watch those shows all the time, then you won't get anything accomplished and you won't meet REAL people. :) I also think they give a skewed view of REAL people.....the majority are not like those.

thebossbab 01-15-2011 07:58 AM

I can proudly say, I've never watched a Survivor show!!!! I think the reality shows appeal to a younger group of people?!?! I think we all have enough going on in our own lives and certainly don't want someone else's in my head.

Ditto!!!!

SueDor 01-15-2011 08:02 AM

I hate all the hitting and bad mouths they have on these shows. Then reporters wonder why a student hit a teacher, or someone fights with another person. If young adults watch these shows they think its ok to hit and yell.
Stupid, Stupid, Stupid

kinrosc 01-15-2011 08:08 AM

Well, I've watched 4 out of the 5 at some time or another, and it's pretty much just brainless activity err or non-activity I should say...I did in fact have nothing better to do, but I didn't turn the channel after landing on it either...hmmmm?? :D

great aunt jacqui 01-15-2011 08:13 AM

I am on that box with you!

nativetexan 01-15-2011 08:19 AM

I go right past the channels that have those shows! not to my taste at all. Can't think why anyone would watch them. if no one did, they would go away.

lauriejo 01-15-2011 08:21 AM

I have often wondered if people watch them so they (maybe subconciously even) can feel better about themselves since the people on those shows are such jerks.

Kitsie 01-15-2011 08:22 AM

And these people are called "celebrities"?? I thought that meant someone whose life should be celebrated!

magnolia 01-15-2011 08:32 AM

My boyfriend likes to watch these shows for the drama. Personally, I think they're stupid and shouldn't be on t.v. The language is horrible and they don't set any kind of example for anyone. Why would I want to sit and watch some foul-mouthed bratty adult cry, whine, and drink all day? I wouldn't and I don't.

I can NOT stand these type of shows either,to me they just teach the younger ones that if they act like an A-- they may become famous.

quiltlady37 01-15-2011 08:42 AM

Kudos to all of you. I agree I think this type of show and all of the violent shows is what is wrong with our society today. There is no longer any shock value to disfunctional behavior.

BellaBoo 01-15-2011 08:44 AM

The money is outrageous for the people on the show. The min. wage per 'star' is half a million for a season, if the show becomes a hit, the 'star' makes the producers millions as well as themselves. Most of the reality shows of this type of junk are produced by Ryan Seacreast of American Idol.
The one show I did like was Little People and most of TLC, History, and Discover reality shows are informative and entertaining.

joan_quilts 01-15-2011 09:07 AM

I avoid those shows! I can't stand most reality tv. It is a joke. The one on MTV 16 and Pregnant is almost encouraging girls to get pregnant to be on tv! And Murray is just down right disgusting! I have never watched that show but my dil does and thinks it is "funny". I don't like that kind of entertainment!

Candace 01-15-2011 09:26 AM

I think these shows are popular because after watching any of them, you're filled with a giant sense of relief. Relief that you're not living such a stupid, superficial existence and very thankful of your own life and family!

I agree 100%

bj 01-15-2011 09:29 AM

Honestly, I have watched a couple of them...Mostly I'm just glad I'm not them. I wouldn't like the public exposure 24/7.

liminanc 01-15-2011 09:34 AM

These go under the "everybody loves a train wreck" theory, as long as they aren't involved. Kinda like "Hoarders" makes you feel better that your life isnt that chaotic lol

happymrs 01-15-2011 10:05 AM

I don't watch any of this either, but find it sad, that it is taking over so much of prime time tv. What a waste, do they think we are all of this mentality, & only want to watch more & more of this kind of garbage? Good reason to watch less & less on tv. We buy DVDs alot, movies we really like, & boy, do they come in handy quite often these days!...

Somebody watches or they wouldn't be on, just glad it isn't me watching. I mute the ads for these shows so don't really know what they are about but can tell by seeing pictures it is not something I want to waste my time on.

Ditter43 01-15-2011 10:27 AM

I consider that junk television. I don't watch any of it!

I couldn't agree more!

ptquilts 01-15-2011 10:49 AM

wow, glad to know I am not alone in my low opinion of these shows!!

I miss the great old shows like Taxi, Cheers, Barney Miller - consistently funny and great talent.

I will confess to watching Hoarders/ing, Animal Hoarders, and the ghost shows. Some of the ones on Discovery I think they should move to the "WTF" channel - 900 pound woman, I am addicted to eating detergent, etc.

patchsamkim 01-15-2011 10:57 AM

I have better things to do than watch these types of shows...the only "reality show" I have watched has been Extreme Makeover:Home Edition...any others I don't make time to watch.

Well said...........One of the K girls made over 6 mill. last yr.!!!!
for what??????????????????????? When I watch TV I want something to make me laugh.....not other people's drama

frugalfabrics 01-15-2011 11:07 AM

I don't watch tv and don't have cable/sattelite - got rid of it years ago and I don't miss it a bit.

Everything I need to know, I can find on the internet, at my convenience. I read the news, when I want, not at 6pm, like the rest of the world...that's pretty much all I use to watch - well, that and the weather, but I can see that on the computer too.

And my entire quilting world is available to me on-line, all the time.

Ramona Byrd 01-15-2011 04:43 PM

First, I'd like to say what a lovely Butterfly thebossbab has. It positively GLOWS.

As for TV, I have one, cancelled the cable some years ago and do intend to sign up again sometime if I ever hear of something interesting going on that I can't find on the Internet. Even can find old TV programs and can watch them with no commercials. I'll have to hunt them up again some day, they were nice ones, even The Adams Family, which was better than what I hear is on now.
I have masses of old shows we taped and lots of CDs..I watch one or two per year so shared them with friends who were burned out but someone gave them an old Video player.

I DO miss the Carol Burnett show..it was nicely insane and laughable in a nice way.

Lol! Totally agree. They are a waste of space on tv. They could be using those time slots for better shows.

kbs 01-15-2011 04:47 PM

There is no point, most families have enough going on without sitting down in the evening and watching reality shows that are staged for a camera.

auntmag 01-15-2011 04:51 PM

Don't forget "The Bachelor", "Bachelorette", and "Survivor". I agree with the others, these shows are just plain stupid.

renee765 01-15-2011 05:17 PM

I have a theory. And that's all it is, just a theory. Back in the 'olden days' when we were lucky to have a black and white little tv screen encased in a huge wood cabinet, most mothers were at home, doing ironing, cooking, etc. And these women liked to watch soap operas during the day while they were doing chores around the house. Fast forward to the present: a LOT of women work outside the home, so don't ever watch soap operas. So the tv stations put on reality shows at night to fill the void of snooping into other people's lives. Just a theory.

Zappycat 01-15-2011 05:23 PM

TV is getting worse and worse. My daughter (18) watches Jersey Shore. I can't even sit in the room when that show is on. Its just horrendous. Right now the only TV show I like is Glee... and I love that one!

QuiltQtrs 01-15-2011 05:27 PM

Don't recall when "television" first entered out lives and homes, but it has
definitely not fulfilled our expectations. I think even the "news" programs
now are geared only to silly sensationalism ... not worthy of our time.
My favorites are Nova, Turner Classic Movies, PBS specials, and of course,
football.
