I was making smaller bags so just cut them down to 7" to 10". You keep the top part with the zipper pull---I don't know of any way to reuse the excess length you cut off as there is no zipper pull nor the metal ends that stop the zipper pull so I have just trashed the ends cut off.

You can cut off the top part or you can cut off the bottom part. Whichever you do, be sure to tack the cut ends well so that the pull doesn't run off the top or the bottom.
I made a tote and wanted a zipper on it. I sewed the top part of the way-too-long zipper on the tote and left the bottom end hanging inside. Now, when that tote wears out, I can salvage the zipper to something else.
I like the little loops and handles, too.

Check out http://www.aliexpress.com
I've been ordering all kinds of stuff from them. Zippers, zipper pulls, purse hardware.....I haven't had any problems at all with any of my orders.
The only "bad" thing - it could take a month to receive your order. But you can't beat the prices!

In Gastonia, NC, there used to be a craft, thread store a few miles from Mary Jo's where one could buy brand name thread and all sorts of goodies at a wonderful price. I bought zippers from a basket for 25 cents each. Charlie was the owner of the store, but can't find my info on the store now.
