I made my 15 month old grandson a romper out of seersucker. I washed it today and it completely came apart at most of the seams. Why did this happen and do I try to repair it? I had made his brother shorts and they came out fine!

The one thing I can think of is seersucker must be serged or finished so no raw edges can ravel. If you done that, I'm not sure what might have happened. The quality of fabric can be a factor, too. Hope you can figure a way to salvage the outfit!! It sounds adorable. I have used lots of seersucker for children's clothes and loved it.

It sounds like there was a problem of some kind either with the thread or the stitching. I would just go ahead and re-stitch the seams...maybe using a slightly smaller stitch length.

You can also do a "mock" French seam by just stitching the regular 5/8" seam then folding the edges to the center of the seam and stitching again close to the fold. This serves two purposes, encloses the raw edges and gives another row of stitching. I love this for kids clothes!

I agree with mom-6...sounds like maybe a stitch problem. I think her solution will work too. Have you sewn anything since this project, and how did the stitching come out? Good luck!

I don't "do" seersucker but my mother always used flat-felled or french seams when she did.

My mom made me a maternity top some 28 yrs old out of seersucker fabric. She did not use flat-felled seams or even pink the raw edges. I still have that top - sleep in it during the warm summer weather. It's faded but still holding together

I learned the hard way many years ago that you need to either zig zag the seams (now I have a serger) or do as other suggested with french or flat felled seams. It just seems to be a more loosely woven fabric. I don't use searsucker much but I do like it!
