Such sayings are fun. There are several books covering just this topic. One popular book is an older publication, Common Phrases: And Where They Come From.

Yes, nativetexan! Having had English grandparents was fun for that. " Goodness gracious, Godness Agnes!"

Okay, that's a new one. I'm thinking most anything would be sexier than socks on a rooster

"Fine as frog's hair" which means excellent, very well, feeling in the best of health and spirits, in a good or pleasant mood. This is my favorite saying.

If that boy had an idea it would die of loneliness. (my dad's favorite)

If you don't straighten up we're gonna have a come to Jesus meetin'. (my grandma when a gang of grand kids were fighting)

Dead as a door nail. I could never understand that one but it is from England and is as far back as Dickens novels.

"it's not my first rodeo" --or as my daughter says (who is known for using phrases that are ALMOST right), "Not my first merry-go-round."

"Sexier than socks on rooster" made me laugh out loud . Never heard it, but the image cracks me up .

My Nana used to say "ain't nothin' wrong with a head covered in fine frog fur" referring to my grandfather being bald. Nana was from Texas.

Just a few of my grandparents sayings:

Useless as tits on a boar hog
stinks to high heaven
Drunk as a skunk
Silly as a goose
treat you like a redheaded stepchild
Slow as molasses
Mean as a snake
Stubborn as a mule
Lazier then a hounddog

My mother-in-law had two priceless ones: if you asked a question that had an obvious answer, she would say, "does a bear %$@# in the woods?" Her other one was, "he's happier than a piss-ant with a new rastlin' jacket."
