Baking soda (about a cup) added to wash water helps remove that sour smell. I use this when I've done a load of wash and left it in the washer too long! Works for me.

Try Lavender or lemon scented Pine Sol. My DS's socks from football practice & clothes smell so bad they would gag a maggot. I mean rank. And he is such a sweet clean boyman. This takes that nasty smell out. I just add about 1/2 cup with wash cycle. No more stinky.

Several people mentioned vinegar. I've read that soaking the clothes in vingear water before washing will help. I plan to take all the towels out of my closet and do that, there is an odor.

I think its time to talk to DH and ask him to cooperate with you and the problems you are encountering with this nasty smell. If he had two or three gis, you could rotate them quickly.

Or, better yet, you could ask him to wash it himself.

I make up the homemade soap from the recipe posted here. Since I have done that, I have no mildew around the edge of my washing machine, the clothes smell good, and they do not stink even if I leave them overnight.

What is cloudy ammonia?

I use Borax for Hubby's stinky whites. He's a mechanic and can really stink up some undies and socks! It does not turn the whites yellow like bleach will.

Read somewhere to use 20 Mule Team Borax. Tried it and it worked like a charm! I used hot water, laundry detergent and the Borax and let them soak for about 1/2 hour.

Hope this helps. = )

Are any of the remedies posted here safe for front-loaders? Pine-sol, ammonia, borax?

I find that baking soda gets out smells really well. Just let it soak for an hour or so & then wash.
